Simple Woman’s Daybook January 2020
Looking out my window…
It’s an overcast rainy day. Yes, rain in Canada in January. What weird and wacky weather we have these days.
I am thinking…
about how lovely it is to have a few days over the holidays that haven’t been scheduled. As it turns out, some urgent matters have popped up at work so I’m doing a few hours of work after all on a couple of those days, but the rest of the days are being spent hanging out with family.
I really enjoy this time when I don’t have to rush through things or refocus my mind back to being in the moment instead of thinking about what’s next. We’ve just been talking, playing, and generally hanging out together.
In the time on my own, I’ve been reading for pleasure, watching old movies and TV shows (Father Dowling Mysteries and Diagnosis Murder), and working on some embroidery and paper quilling. It’s a delicious way to spend my time.
This all got me thinking about how I really need to add more of this down time and family time into my schedule in 2020. Fortunately, with my new job I’ll be able to do just that. It’s going to be good for all of us. However, I’m one who’s prone to jumping back into work (I do love my work!), so I need to remind myself just how wonderful this time has been.
I am thankful…
For my new job! I can actually take some time off and don’t have to constantly be worrying about money because it pays reliably and on time.
One of my favorite things…
I’ve been using this for about 6 weeks now and in just a short time, this has already started making a difference that I can see and feel for my skin. It recovers lost moisture and features moisture-retaining ingredients to hold hydration while forming a water-retaining barrier and includes Vitamin A to reduce fine lines.

I am creating…
A new plan for a new year and a new job. My schedule is changing a bit, I’m fine tuning parts of it, and I’m building in some SCHEDULED down time. It feels good.
I am wearing…
Who’s Your Santa pajama pants, an old red tshirt, and my new fuzzy gray slippers. My hair is up in a messy bun and eagerly awaiting my haircut and dye (pink hair again – YAY!) coming at the end of the week.
I am reading (read) /watching (watched) / listening to…
I am rewatching Schitt’s Creek from the beginning. Not familiar with it? It’s weird. It’s quirky. And it’s hilarious. They just finished filming their final season so now’s the time to catch up on it before the new season starts again next week.
Here in Canada, it’s available on the CBC app or on Netflix. In the US, it’s on the POP app and older seasons are on Netflix. I think you can also buy episodes from Amazon Prime.
I’m reading The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms. It’s a light read but pretty fun and engaging. Amy is a mild-mannered single mom who has basically put herself on hold to raise her children and support them after her husband walks out on them. The book takes us through Amy’s fun-filled journey back to being Amy.

I am hoping…
to find a babysitter soon! I need one for an upcoming business trip to Tennessee and it’s proven more difficult to find one than I had hoped. I had kind of forgotten how exhausting it can be to do all those little bits and pieces of parenting.
I am learning…
More about needle felting. I really love it but I’ve not made any three dimensional items yet and I’d like to learn how. I see a class for it coming up at the local heritage home and may sign up for that!
In my kitchen…
We have still have lots of shortbread cookies and Lebkuchen. We’re nibbling on appetizers today instead of doing any cooking. It’s a good day to be a foodie!
In the school room…
Walter is obsessed with learning his colors, letters, and numbers. He can consistently count from 1-10 (yes both by rote and correspondence), and names some of his colors right all the time but is still confusing a few.
He can sing his ABCs and can identify and name about half of them when he sees them too. It’s exciting to see his little mind racing ahead as he tries to absorb more and more knowledge!
In my garden…
I live in Canada and it’s January. Everything is brown and dead looking – well except for the evergreen trees. Gosh, what would we do without them to remind us that life goes on?

Closing Notes…
A new year isn’t magical – even if it IS 2020. (Those repeating numbers just scream special to me!). You can make changes anytime you want in your life. It doesn’t have to be a Monday or the beginning of a week, month, or year.
Sometimes though, embracing that idea of a fresh new start when it is already a special day can make it easier to jump aboard. What have you been putting off? What change would you like to make for this brand new year and brand new decade?
