A Winter Getaway to CasinoRama Resort

Normally, when I am planning a winter getaway, it would mean just that. Getting away from winter. But I’m open to pretty much any opportunity so when I got the chance to go to CasinoRama Resort in Orillia, Ontario this March, I jumped at it. And I’m really really happy that I did.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. I didn’t know much of anything about CasinoRama, other than that it obviously houses a casino. Not being much of a casino-goer (well, at least I wasn’t before I went there), I was pleasantly surprised to see just how much there was to do at CasinoRama and in the area around it. In fact, after being there for only 24 hours, I was already planning to return for a family vacation for my extended family this summer. I had viewed casino resorts as adult only type destinations but we’ll be bringing a group that varies in age from 7 to 65 and I already know there will be plenty to do for all of us.

My group of travelling companions and I were wowed from the moment we entered CasinoRama Resort. The decor is spot on. It speaks of the nature that is all around this area. It feels elegant yet rustic and comfortable. And it makes me feel like I’m being wrapped up in a hug of Canadiana heritage.

This theme continues throughout the resort.  CasinoRama is located on Rama First Nation and their pride of Rama heritage is clear throughout the facility. As an art buff, I was thrilled by the many arts and culture exhibits worked right into the design and architecture of the building. It truly is a beautiful building to simply walk around and bask in its design.

My hotel suite didn’t fail to exceed my expectations either. Inspired by a classic Muskoka lakeside cottage, the first thing I noticed was the fire place, and believe me, I used it every night that I was there. There is nothing like curling up by the firelight to read a good book and then falling asleep in its glow (it has an automatic shutoff for safety!). A suite always makes me happy too. Besides the king size bed, there was a roomy sitting area with a flat-screen television (assuming you ever had time to actually watch it). If travelling with others, you have plenty of room and no one feels like they are cramped for space.

My only complaint (if asked to find one) about the bathroom is that I wished it had double sinks. Not that I needed more than one, but if travelling with the rest of my family, it would certainly come in handy. But really, that’s a minor point when you have plenty of counter space and a separate bathtub and shower. And can we talk about that shower? Luxury. Pure luxury.

Of course, many people go to CasinoRama Resort for one obvious reason. The casino.

But I’m not a “casino person”. That’s what I’ve always told people. To be honest, casinos bored me. I’ve been to Vegas and from the history and pop culture aspect of it, it was interesting, but that’s it. I didn’t even gamble until I got to the airport to come home and thought, hmmm. People will tease me if I didn’t even try it. So I played a few slots and called it a day. That changed at CasinoRama. You see, they have a program where they will teach you how to play the games!!! Did you know that? Completely takes away the intimidation of walking up to a table as a newbie! They taught us how to play Roulette and Blackjack and once I really understood the games, they were a lot of fun.

Another great reason to visit CasinoRama? Live entertainment. Some of the biggest acts in the world have appeared there. The Tragically Hip, Reba McIntyre, Jason DeRulo, Carrie Underwood, Gordon Lightfoot, Jeff Dunham, Howie Mandel, Diana Ross, and Riverdance to name just a few. You can find out who’s appearing next here.

Dining options abound at CasinoRama! From pub fare at Simcoe Yard House to sit-down casual dining at Weirs and Cedar, an all-you-can-eat buffet at Couchiching Court, fast food that doesn’t taste like fast food at Cedar Express and The Noodle Bar, and finally, fine upscale dining at St. Germain’s and The Willow.

Oh the spa. Want a little me time? This spa has everything you need. Massage, facial, mani/pedi, waxing, body wrap, body polish, and more. I’m pretty sure I have never ever felt so relaxed in my life as I have after receiving this massage. It was divine!

For more relaxation and fun, the hotel boasts a salt water pool, hot tub, eucalyptus steam room, sauna, and adult only fitness centre.

So, what do you think? Amazing place, right? But here’s the thing. All I’ve outlined here is what’s available IN CasinoRama Resort. There’s so much to do in the surrounding area as well. Like I said, there’s something for all ages and all interests here in Ontario’s Lake Country.
