When one of my family members has a health concern, of course I want the absolute best care for them. Years ago, this would mean a visit to the doctor (possibly with some tests ordered) and often, a trip to the pharmacy for a prescription. In recent years, I have been seeking out a more well-rounded approach to our health care. For us, that means taking advantage of the health support services available at select Loblaws and Zehrs stores.
I have had some ongoing issues with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It began with a visit to my doctor, a prescription, and a suggestion from him that I visit Loblaws for some additional health care support. Did you know that you can do more at your Loblaws Pharmacy than simply hand in your prescription and then pick it up when it’s ready? Of course, the pharmacist will counsel you on any special instructions and cautions for your prescribed medication, but they can offer health care advice as well.
How do I renew my prescription?
I visit my Loblaws’ pharmacist regularly to monitor my blood pressure readings and on my most recent visit, she walked me through a heart health and diabetes risk assessment, offering me practical advice for managing my health challenges. In addition, I received advice and guidance on managing my many food allergies. The Loblaws’ pharmacy is a wealth of health care management and assistance, whether you have ongoing issues or simply want some preventative help.
What do my blood pressure numbers mean?
In conjunction with the Loblaws’ pharmacists are their on-staff Loblaws Dietitians. I first became familiar with my local dietitian through the in-store displays and cooking demonstrations. What I didn’t realize at the time was the scope of services the dietitians can provide. It’s not just about showing you new recipes (although that is fun!); the dietitian is available for one-on-one consultations as well.
Working with her and the pharmacist, we came up with a plan for me to alter my eating plan to one that fits into my extremely busy schedule, but still offers me the best strategy for taking care of my high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I had further concerns about the diabetes that runs in my family and we were able to incorporate some ideas to help prevent it into the plan as well.
Can a diet help me manage my diabetes?
In one of the sessions, she took me on a tour of the grocery store, helping me learn how to properly read the nutritional information labels on foods and make better choices. Did you know that you can arrange a tour for your family or even groups (what a great way to help children learn about better eating habits from an early age)? Did you know that you can find out more about when and how to introduce solid foods to your baby from your Loblaws’ dietitian? Dealing with menopause? The dietitian can help with that too!
You can learn more about these services! Check out the Loblaws Facebook Live event on March 22 at 8 pm Eastern. Tune into the Loblaws Facebook page to learn from their pharmacists and dietitians, and to ask them your questions.
