How are these Rice Krispies Christmas Trees Made?

This recipe can be made on a stovetop or in the microwave. I’ve included instructions for both methods. Often at Christmas, there are holiday colored Christmas Rice Krispies available and these are a fun alternative to regular ones for this recipe.

I’ve made Christmas trees here, but you can certainly make many other holiday shapes, especially if using the cookie cutter method. Just be sure to have cooking spray on hand to keep the mixture from sticking to the cookie cutters or your knife.

Can I substitute any of the ingredients?

Whatever you do, do NOT switch out the butter for anything else. Your Christmas tree treats just won’t turn out as well with margarine or other butter substitutes. The butter provides not only the best consistency, but the perfect flavor to these yummy goodies.

It is best to use fresh marshmallows as stale ones may not melt as well. You can use 1 jar (7 ounces) of marshmallow creme in place of the bag of marshmallows. Switch out any of the decorations as you’d like.

You can add 1/2 tsp of vanilla extra to your butter and marshmallows mixture if you’d like.

Can I make these Christmas Trees ahead of time?

Yes you can! They freeze beautifully! You can make these and freeze them for up to 6 weeks, making it something you can get out of the way before the hectic part of the holiday season starts. Take them out of the freezer and let them sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before you plan to serve them.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 10 oz marshmallows 1 standard package
  • 1/4 tsp food coloring green
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies
  • 2 tbsp sprinkles
  • 1/3 cup vanilla icing

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium low heat. Stir in the marshmallows and continue stirring until melted. (If using a microwave, you can place both the butter and marshmallows in a bowl and heat on high for 2 minutes. Stir. Heat for another minute. Stir. If there are any unmelted bits, continue microwaving at 20 second intervals until melted or close to melted. Often once close to completely melted, if you stir it well, the heat from the surrounding mixture will finish the job!

  2. Stir in the food coloring (and vanilla if using).

  3. Press this mixture into a 13 X 9 inch pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray. The mixture will be quite hot at first so work carefully. You can use a buttered spatula or a piece of wax paper to help you press it down.

  4. Allow this to cool slightly. You can create the tree shapes by cutting the Rice Krispie mixture in half lengthwise and then into triangles. Or you can use cookie cutters but be sure to spray them with cooking spray first.

  5. Add sprinkles to the trees and press them in slightly. If you are using icing to create garland, that gets added last.

  6. If you want to, you can add craft sticks or straws as handles for these treats.
