Speroway Giveaway: Help Build a Medical Clinic in Haiti and Enter to Win an iPad Prize Pack!

As a classroom teacher, there were many times that I had the experience of working with children who came to school hungry because their family simply couldn’t afford enough food for them.  We collected suitable winter clothing so that they were dressed warmly enough to brave the Canadian winter weather.  At Christmas, we had toy drives to provide them with something special and fun under their Christmas trees.  Some of my students were new to Canada, having fled persecution and death in war-torn countries.  Others came to me from women’s shelters, having escaped with their mothers, a home in which domestic violence was the norm.  My heart broke for those children and my fellow teachers and I did all we could to provide them with the necessities they were lacking in a safe, loving environment.

Have you heard of Speroway?  “Speroway is an international non-profit relief organization – A Canadian Registered Charity.  Speroway, in partnership with caring Canadians, responds to the needs of children and their families, in Canada and around the world, by providing food, medicine, education and other essentials with Christian love, compassion and integrity” (from the Speroway website).  Speroway, formerly known as Feed the Children, Canada, means:  Spero = Latin for hope, and way = to lead the way.  Their mission is to deliver hope to needy children here in Canada (in particular in our First Nations communities) as well as around the world.

The work of Speroway touches needy children in so many ways; certainly, they provide the physical necessities of life to help children’s bodies grow healthy and strong but they haven’t forgotten how crucial it is for children to receive the love and support they need to grow emotionally and mentally strong as well.   Speroway understands the importance of helping children, body, mind, heart, and soul.  They are involved in food drops, providing medical teams, setting up abandoned baby centers, construction projects, and so much more.

When I visited their website, I was especially touched by the Nyota program in Kenya.  Established in 2009, this program has been providing orphans, some of whom have been rescued from juvenile prisons and others who have been abandoned on city streets, with a loving home.  At Nyota, they are provided with three meals a day, clothing and other necessities, health care, education, a chance to play, and of course, love and support.  Currently, Speroway is working hard to raise funds to build a new medical clinic in Haiti this year.  This clinic will serve 30 orphanages throughout Port au Prince and 1400 orphans (information from Speroway’s Facebook page).
