I’ve decided in order to motivate myself to keep sketching AND to keep sharing them, that I’m instituting Saturday Sketches.
As taught by one of my art teachers, I will sometimes use someone else’s art as practice for my sketching. I loved this piece when I saw it in a book and decided to give it a try. I did the majority of the sketch as a contour drawing. In contour drawing, you are to look at the subject you are sketching and not at your paper. You keep your pencil on the paper at all times, never lifting it to move to another location, and as such you get very focused on the lines and outlines of the shapes on the page. When I had finished the contour part, I did go back in and add some shading for a bit more detail.
Here is the painting I based my sketch on. It’s Morning Awakening by Eva Gonzales.
