Melting Snowman Hot Chocolate Bombs

There’s something a little magical about snowmen. It probably comes from my days of watching Frosty the Snowman on TV every Christmas.

These Melting Snowman Hot Chocolate Bombs are an easy, hands-on winter treat that kids absolutely love making and even more love watching “explode” into a cozy mug of cocoa.

They’re perfect for snow days, classroom parties, holiday treats, or a fun afternoon kitchen craft when you want something festive but low-stress.

Melting snowman hot chocolate bombs made with white chocolate, cocoa mix, and marshmallows — a fun winter treat for kids.

Melting Snowman Hot Chocolate Bombs

Because they use simple ingredients and no baking at all, these cocoa bombs are a great project for kids with a little grown-up help — and they make adorable homemade gifts, too.

Difficulty: Easy
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Bake Time: N/A
Servings: 9 (2.5-inch cocoa bombs)

Ingredients

Ingredients for melting snowman hot chocolate bombs including white chocolate chips, hot cocoa mix, mini marshmallows, dark chocolate chips, and orange candy melts.

20 oz bag white chocolate chips or white candy melts
2 cups milk chocolate hot chocolate mix
1–1½ cups mini dehydrated marshmallows
½ cup dark chocolate chips
¼ cup orange candy melts

Directions

To make the hot chocolate bombs

Melted white chocolate in a glass bowl ready to use for making hot chocolate bombs.

Melt the white chocolate chips or candy melts in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring well between each round, until smooth.

White chocolate spread into a silicone hot chocolate bomb mold to form the outer shells.

Spoon melted chocolate into each cavity of a hot chocolate bomb mold. Use the back of the spoon to draw the chocolate up the sides, making sure the entire cavity is coated. Allow to set.

Set white chocolate hot chocolate bomb shells inside a silicone mold after chilling.

Once set, add a second layer of melted chocolate around the top edge of each cavity where the two halves will join. A thicker edge helps the bombs seal more securely.

Be careful not to add too much chocolate. You want room for the cocoa mix and marshmallows. Allow to set completely.

Carefully remove the chocolate sphere halves from the mold.

Warm a frying pan over low heat. Gently melt the rim of one sphere by placing it briefly on the pan.

Melt the rim of a second shell half on the pan, then immediately place it on top of the filled half to seal the bomb.

Gently press and smooth the seam, removing any excess melted chocolate. Set aside and repeat with remaining bombs.

To decorate

Melt the dark chocolate chips and orange candy melts separately. Transfer each to its own piping bag.

To enjoy

Place one hot chocolate bomb in a mug. Heat 8–12 ounces of milk or water — the hotter it is, the better the “melting snowman” effect.

Slowly pour the hot liquid over the bomb and stir well. Let cool slightly before drinking and enjoy.

Storage

Store hot chocolate bombs in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 6 months.

Helpful tips

  • If your chocolate looks thick or grainy while melting, slow down and stir frequently — overheating is usually the culprit.
  • Dehydrated mini marshmallows work best inside the bombs because they take up less space and store well long-term.
  • If a seam cracks, you can “glue” it back together with a little melted chocolate applied using a spoon or piping bag.

Easy variations

  • Use peppermint hot chocolate mix for a festive twist.
  • Swap the milk chocolate mix for white hot chocolate for an all-white cocoa bomb.
  • Add a sprinkle of crushed candy cane or mini chocolate chips inside for extra texture.
