I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am about Mary Poppins Returns. As a little girl, Mary Poppins was my favorite live action movie and it’s still there. (Beauty and the Beast, I love you. I really do. But I’m sorry. You’ll have to accept second place because my heart belongs to Mary and Bert). I even have a Mary Poppins doll that my daughter and son-in-law gave me for my birthday a couple years ago. So, when I heard about Mary Poppins Returns, I had two feelings. OH YAY and OH NO! The “oh no” didn’t last very long though. Once I saw how beautifully Disney handled the live action version of Beauty and the Beast and saw the cast for Mary Poppins Returns, all hesitation was gone.
MARY POPPINS RETURNS stars Emily Blunt as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure; Lin-Manuel Miranda as her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London; Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks; Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks; and Julie Walters as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen; with Colin Firth as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins; and Meryl Streep as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy.
The film also introduces three new Banks’ children played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson. Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books and Dick Van Dyke is Mr. Dawes Jr., the retired chairman of the bank now run by Firth’s character.
I’m so excited about Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Meryl Streep in this cast. But let me tell you, the appearance of Dick Van Dyke (anyone else have a crush on Bert the chimney sweep?) and the casting of Angela Lansbury as the Balloon Lady sent me right over the top. Oh Disney, you DO know me well.
In the sequel, which arrives in theatres this Christmas, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Between that and the release of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms movie, my Christmas is going to be magical indeed!

OH Christmas!!! I admit at first I was like Emily Blunt? Really? And who is the other guy? But I think it will be fun to see how Disney remakes this and shares it with an entirely different generation of families.

I love the whole idea of it too! I think they can completely do justice to the original but bring it forward a bit and give us Mary Poppins fans something new to savor.
