Spoon Dragonfly Craft
Using just a few simple materials, kids can create their very own fluttery friend. It’s a fun project for summer days, rainy afternoons, or even as a classroom activity. Plus, it’s great for developing fine motor skills and encouraging imaginative play.
Supplies for Your Pipe Cleaner Dragonfly Craft:
- Disposable wooden spoons.
- Colorful pipe cleaners.
- Hot glue.
- Googly eyes.
- Colorful markers.

How to Make a Wooden Spoon Dragonfly Step by Step:

Step 1:
Grab two pipe cleaners in your favorite colors. (I’m using one green and one purple here!)

Step 2:
Take one pipe cleaner and fold it in half to create a loop at the top — kind of like an upside-down “U.”
These looped wings are simple enough for little hands, making it a great fine motor skills activity for preschoolers.

Step 3:
Twist the middle where the two ends meet to secure the loop. Then, shape both sides into small loops to form the top pair of dragonfly wings.

Step 4:
Take the green pipe cleaner and bend it along the outside of the purple (or blue) pipe cleaner.

Step 5:
Twist the green pipe cleaner along the purple one, securing both ends together.

Step 6:
Cut off any extra pipe cleaner bits sticking out.

Step 7:
Repeat the same steps to make another pair of wings — but this time, make them slightly smaller than the first pair.

Step 8:
Now, grab your disposable wooden spoon.

Step 9:
Use hot glue to attach the larger pair of wings to the back of the spoon.

Step 10:
Glue the smaller pair of wings just below the larger ones.

Step 11:
Take a brown or black pipe cleaner and curl one end to make a little swirly shape.

Step 12:
Make another one just like it, so you have two matching swirly pieces.

Step 13:
Glue these two swirly pipe cleaner pieces on the top part of the wooden spoon — these will be your dragonfly’s antennae!

Step 14:
Glue two googly eyes onto the spoon, just below the antennae.

Step 15:
Use black and pink markers to draw your dragonfly’s cute little face.

FAQs
What age is this craft best suited for?
This craft is great for kids ages 5 and up with adult supervision for the hot glue. Younger kids can join in with pre-made wing sets and some extra hands-on help!
Can I use something other than hot glue?
Yes! Tacky glue can work well, though they will take longer to dry. Glue dots can also be used but may not be quite as secure for the wings and antennae.
What kind of spoons work best?
Disposable wooden spoons work great because they’re lightweight and easy to decorate, but you could also try plastic spoons or even recycled wooden kitchen utensils for a more eco-friendly option.
What else can we use to decorate the dragonfly?
Add glitter, sequins, or stickers to the wings for extra sparkle! Kids could also paint the spoon or use washi tape for added flair.
Wasn’t that a fun and easy way to turn a simple wooden spoon into something so sweet and whimsical? I’d love to see how your dragonflies turned out — feel free to share your creations with me on social media or leave a comment below!
