Episode: “Can’t We All Just Get Along”
This was a tricky challenge for us to interpret. On the show, they worked in teams, creating printed fabrics and using them to make a cohesive mini collection. We don’t have teams to work with so we weren’t able to make a collection. In addition we needed to design the print and of course, on such a small scale that can be a little difficult. We were given 14 hours to complete this challenge.
For the print, I was inspired by Zentangle designs. In some blocked off areas on white fabric, I doodled and tangled my patterns with a fine tipped black Bic Mark It marker.
I don’t think it shows up very well in these pictures but I then took the white fabric with my Zentangle inspired designs on it and pleated it horizontally. I think this adds a nice detail without making the overall look too busy. I brought in a band of plain black as well as when Tim made the rounds of the workroom, he felt the garment lacked just a tiny bit of punch.
The skirt is fluffy and feathery (made from a repurposed feather boa) to add a bit of evening drama to this cocktail dress.
For the accessories from the Piperlime accessory wall, I chose this Badgley Mischka pair of shoes called Humbee II and the two tone necklace from Hive & Honey. I’ve used these accessories before but I’m pretty sure that on the real show, the selection is rotated whereas this one is a bit limited and I didn’t find anything else I felt suitable for my garment.
