Did you know that around the world, 77.6 million girls are not enrolled in either primary or secondary education?

Did you know that of the 16.3 illiterate youth in the world, 63% of them are female?

Did you know that when just 10% more girls attend school, a country’s GDP will go up by 3% on average?

Educated girls have greater opportunities open to them, make more money, and stay healthier.  Their babies tend to be healthier, are more likely to attend school themselves, and thus, the cycle continues.  Statistics show that when you educate a girl, you can break the cycle of poverty in just one generation!

That’s why I’m taking part in the United Nations’ first ever International Day of the Girl Tweetathon on Thursday, October 11, 2012 with 10×10.  10×10 is a worldwide campaign seeking to raise the value of girls by teaching that investing in girls to a degree equal to that of boys is beneficial to everyone. The Tweetathon takes place from 9 am to 9 pm Eastern so you can join in anytime but I’ll be there moderating, along with my friend Margarita, from 2-3 pm.  Follow #IDG2012 to join in the conversation.

EDUCATING GIRLS IS NOT JUST RIGHT; IT’S SMART.
