Looking for something fun to do with your family this Family Day long weekend (February 15-17, 2014)? Here are some ideas from around the area:
- Feb. 15th from 11 am to 2 pm at Cherryhill Village Mall, there will be a pottery wheel demonstration and a free children’s clay time put on by the London Potters Guild.
- The Kinsmen Sugar Bush opens on February 17th from 11 am to 3 pm. Admission is free. The blessing of the forest ceremony kicks things off. The first 50 people in attendance will be allowed to tap a tree and put their name on a bucket. Other activities include a campfire with marshmallows in the woods, walking tours, free pancakes and hot drinks.
- Nature London is holding a nature walk to focus on the Greenway Park ducks. Tour begins at 1:30 pm on Feb. 15th. Meet in the parking lot near the entrance to the Greenway Pollution Plant.
- Free Family Day activities on the 17th at: Byron Community Centre (family board games and volleyball 10 am to noon, family pickelball 1130-1230, family kin ball 1-2 pm, family basketball 215 to 315, and family open gym time 315 to 5 pm), Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre (all ages basketball from 3-5 pm and badminton 5-7 pm), and Medway Community Centre (family hip hop 1115 am to 1215 pm, family zumba 1230 to 130 pm, and family board games 2-4 pm).
- The Museum of Ontario Archaeology is having a Winter Village Fun Day from 10 am to 4 pm on Feb 17th. Admission by donation. Events include: dog sledding, stories in the longhouse, an Indigenous foods cafe, snowshoeing, snow snake throwing, Inuit games and children’s crafts. Park at Banting Secondary school – free shuttle bus provided.
- The Secrets of RADAR Museum is having a family open house from 10 am to 4 pm on Feb. 17th.
- Lambeth Arena is open from 11 am to 1 pm for a free family skate day. You can meet third generation Canadian Olympian Mark Oldershaw from 11 am to noon.
- Family Curling at the London Curling Club Feb 17th. Join in on a free curling clinic and just for fun game. New curler’s instruction takes place from 915 am to 1030 am followed by the game from 1030 am to 1230 pm. Children aged 9 and up accompanied by an adult are welcome – they must wear a helmet. Please carry clean soled running shoes and wear warm layered clothing.
- The London Regional Children’s Museum is celebrating Black History Month from 11 am to 3 pm on Feb. 17th. There will be dancing to the sounds of Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument, the Steelpan. Cultural songs and stories from Nigeria. Kids can learn to make their own kite, have their hair braided, and taste delicious treats from the Caribbean and Africa. Disney princess Tiana will be on hand for photos.
- It’s an Arctic Adventure at Storybook Gardens all Family Day weekend! Polar bear show, Iceberg Lego Station, Storybook Village Ice Castle, Arctic Expedition Trail. Open 10 am to 8 pm on the 15th and 10 am to 5 pm on the 16th and 17th. Check out the website for more information.
