Crocheting has always been one of my favorite comfort activities. There’s something about the gentle rhythm of the stitches that feels like meditation with yarn – calming, centering, and full of heart. I first learned to crochet sitting beside my grandmother Ma, and this easy crochet flower pattern brings back sweet memories of those times.
This beginner-friendly tutorial shows you how to crochet a flower step by step. These crocheted flowers are the same kind Ma used to stitch onto the granny square afghans she made every year. Each Christmas, a few lucky family members would be gifted one of her beautiful handmade blankets. Mine is pink and green and covered in flowers just like these — and now, I’m passing that love forward, one petal at a time.

FAQs
What skill level is this crochet flower pattern best for?
This is a beginner-friendly project! If you’re comfortable with basic stitches like chains, single crochet, and double crochet, you’ll do great. Even newer crocheters can follow along with the step-by-step photos.
What kind of yarn should I use?
I used medium-weight (worsted) acrylic yarn, but you can easily substitute with cotton or any yarn you have on hand. Just adjust your hook size to match the yarn weight.
What crochet hook size did you use?
This flower was made with a 2.5mm hook, which gives it a nice tight texture. You can use a larger hook if you’re using thicker yarn or want a looser stitch.
Can I use these flowers for other projects?
Absolutely! They make adorable appliqués for tote bags, hats, baby blankets, hair clips, bunting, or gift wrapping. Make them a little smaller and add them to an afghan like my grandmother used to. Make them the size I did and they make great coasters. You can even string a few together into a garland.
How big is the finished flower?
With the yarn and hook used, each finished flower measures approximately 4.5 inches across, but this will vary slightly based on your tension and materials.
