Tips for Creating a Lightweight Summer Quilt

Just because the weather gets hotter doesn’t mean you won’t have a need for some extra warmth. For those slightly chilly evenings and dawns, you might want a lightweight summer quilt to stay warm. We’re here to help you! Read on for tips to create the perfect one!

Start With Breathable Fabrics

When you go to the craft store to get your fabric, make sure to choose a breathable option. Lightweight, natural materials like pure cotton or linen are great options. In fact, even thin wool fabrics can work because they provide excellent temperature regulation.

Avoid synthetic fabrics at all costs, including heavy flannels or polyester blends. These trap heat and make the quilt less summer-friendly.

Pro Tip

Prewash your quilting fabrics to make sure they don’t shrink after you’ve sewn the piece. Prewashing also softens the fabric for dreamy coziness.

Use a Lightweight Batting (or No Batting)

Batting is the layer inside a quilt that gives it thickness and warmth. For summer quilts, less is more! Look for lightweight batting made from cotton or bamboo, as these materials naturally wick away moisture and regulate temperature.

But if you want an ultra-light quilt, you can skip the batting entirely! Instead, back your quilt top with a single layer of fabric for a thinner, breezier design that is still functional.

Pick a Summery Design

Summer is the perfect time to experiment with bright, seasonal designs. Floral patterns, ocean-inspired motifs, and sunny color palettes with yellows, blues, and pastels are great options. Think of designs that feel cheerful and light, just like the season itself.

You can also consider patchwork with large pieces or minimalist patterns to keep the quilt airy and easy to sew. For example, ice cream cone quilt blocks are straightforward to sew and perfect for summer. If you’re not up to sewing a design, choose fabrics with summery prints like pineapples, beach umbrellas, or abstract waves.

Creating the perfect lightweight summer quilt is easy with these tips! Just choose the right fabric, batting, and design, and you’ll end up with a cute, breathable quilt to enjoy on breezy mornings and evenings.
