CRAFT STICK VALENTINE HEART

Filed Under: CELEBRATE, CREATE, Dollar Store Crafts, Valentine's Day

This Craft Stick Valentine Heart is so easy to make! Since it uses supplies you can find at your local dollar store, it’s an expensive one too. From start to finish it takes about half an hour to make one of these Valentine crafts.

Since it’s so inexpensive and easy to make, this Valentine decoration is perfect to make with large groups such as Scouts or in a classroom. You can hang these in windows, add them to tiered trays, or use them to embellish other craft projects such as a wreath.

DOLLAR STORE CRAFT STICK VALENTINE HEARTS

This dollar store craft is well suited for older kids and teens. With younger kids, you may want to precut the sticks for them and use white craft glue instead of a glue gun.

Materials:

  • Craft Sticks, Jumbo
  • Felt Heart and Key Table Scatter (or other embellishment)
  • Iridescent Glitter Glue
  • Twine or string (you could substitute ribbon)
  • Glue Gun and Glue Sticks – Low Temp Works Best (or liquid craft glue – just remember this will require more drying time)
  • Acrylic Craft Paint – Pink (or your desired color)
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors

Instructions:

STEP ONE

Gather all materials for this craft project. To create the heart, line up four jumbo craft sticks at a slight angle on your work surface.

When working with younger children, you might want to create templates out of cardboard (like from a cereal box) and have the children glue the sticks to the cardboard. Or you may want to assemble the hearts ahead of time and have the kids do the painting and embellishing.

Using scissors, trim additional jumbo craft sticks to the width of the heart and attach with glue. Repeat with the second half of the heart, lining up the craft sticks at the opposite angle. Remember that cutting the sticks can be a bit difficult for children so they may need your assistance.

Glue the heart halves together by lining up the halves along the bottom edges.

STEP TWO

Paint the front and sides of the craft stick Valentine heart with pink acrylic craft paint. Let dry, and apply a second coat, if needed.

STEP THREE

Squeeze out a small amount of iridescent glitter glue and spread out over the surface of the craft stick Valentine heart. We find it easiest to do this step with our fingers. Set aside to dry.

STEP FOUR

Select a heart and a key shape of your choice from the variety pack of felt table scatter. You can substitute other embellishments here as you’d like.

Glue them onto the heart. Tie baker’s twine or skinny ribbon into a bow, and glue to the heart to finish.

It can be fun to make a whole selection of these in different colors for a display. They’re a fun substitute for a Valentine card too. You can add the sentiment on the back using a marker or pen.
