Colour the World of a Child in Honduras

A dear new artist friend of mine, Liz, is in Honduras doing some amazingly wonderful work helping the children there.  Her stories of teaching these children about art through art journaling have been so uplifting to me.  Liz will soon participate in a trek up and down the mountain tracks helping to deliver brand new Tom Shoes to 2ooo children there!  Her next goal?  To provide an art kit for each child as well as one for each of their teachers.  I don’t think it’s possible to find a person out there with a bigger heart than Liz.

Apparently, right now at Staples stores in the US (I checked – they’re not available here in Canada) there are some pencil cases containing school supplies that have been put on clearance for 99 cents.  These would be such wonderful gifts for the Honduran children.  But there are also so many possibilities out there at your local dollar stores or perhaps this would be a great time to clean out your own stashes and share art materials with some precious children.  As Liz says:  “Most of these kids have never seen a crayon let alone held one! These kids have never had an art class….”

Liz’s call for help touched my heart and I headed out today to my favourite store for low cost arts and crafts supplies around here, Dollarama.  I only spent $40 and yet got so much that I couldn’t get it to fit in frame to take a photo of it all.  Dollarama has so many great deals and I’ve learned to shop there FIRST and then if I can’t find what I need, I go on to another store.  Often, I can accomplish all the shopping I need right there at Dollarama and for such an incredible bargain!

Heading out to Liz and the children in Honduras this week are:

1 pkg. of decorative edge scissors (4 in the pack)

4 palettes of paints

1 pack of glitter craft foam

4 packs of pompoms

1 pack of white chenille stems

2 packs of paper shapes

5 glue sticks

1 assorted pack of glitter

4 packs of 5 paintbrushes each

1 container of craft foam letters and numbers

2 packages of coloured feathers

1 large sheet of stickers

2 packages of craft foam sheets

5 packages of embellishments: sequins and rhinestones

I wanted to buy so much more but this is a start!  Next I’m going to clean out my stash and from now on, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for more goodies to send along.  Liz, I hope this is a help!

Now, who’s going to join me?  What about YOU?  Are you able to send some much needed supplies to Honduras?

If you’re interested in seeing the work that is being done there check out Liz’s site here: http://colourachildsworld.weebly.com/index.html  Look under “donations” for the address and important shipping information.  There’s also a Paypal button there if you’d prefer to donate cash.

I can’t wait to see what the kids are able to do with these supplies.  I sure hope it brings smiles to their faces!  Shopping for it sure brought a smile to mine!
