If you’re looking for an adorable but practical baby gift, look no further. You can sew a baby burp cloth in very little time and with little sewing experience. It’s a project that’s simple to make and easily adaptable.
These are great baby shower gifts that come with that personal touch because you made them yourself. Make a whole stack of them – they’ll be greatly appreciated!
Baby Burp Cloth Instructions
Baby burp cloths come in several different sizes at the store. The one you see here is 10″x17″. You can easily make them shorter or longer and make use of scrap fabric to put them together.
Lay your flannel or other fabric out. Flannel, fleece, and terry cloth are the most absorbent fabrics, so I use these. But you can use a cotton or poly-cotton blend character fabric for one side and terry cloth for the other.
I like to iron it so it’s perfectly flat. Then cut out a piece that’s 10.5 by 17.5 inches. Take this piece of fabric and lay it out on a piece of terry cloth and cut out the same size piece.
Terry cloth is used for the side that will soak up all the fun stuff the baby spits up.
Now, clip or pin the two pieces together with the pattern side facing in. Using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, start stitching all the way around, leaving a small opening at one end. This is the opening you’ll use to turn the burp cloth right side out.
Once you’ve stitched all the way around, pull the fabric through the opening and make sure all the edges are pushed out.
Fold in the fabric at the opening so that it’s even with the rest of the edges. Top stitch. You can choose to top stitch all the way around the whole cloth or just to close the opening.
For the last part, I divide the burp cloth into threes by folding it. Press to mark the folds and then, stitch down the two folds.
This will create an easy way to fold the cloth when going into the diaper bag. This is optional but makes folding easier in the long run.
You can use this same idea to create diaper change pads as well. In place of the terrycloth, use a waterproof fabric. A good size for change pads is 20 by 30 inches.
