SCARECROW GNOME DOLLAR STORE CRAFT

Materials:

  • Craft Sticks, Jumbo
  • Cotton Mop Head
  • Wooden Ball or Bead
  • Buttons, Brown
  • Ribbon, Gingham – Orange, Green
  • Silk Sunflower
  • Natural Jute Twine
  • Acrylic Craft Paint – Gold, Light Brown, Medium Brown
  • Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
  • Gallon Zipper Bag
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrush
  • Ruler

Instructions:

STEP ONE

Gather all supplies. Cut approximately 30 individual strings from the cotton mop head with scissors.

Get them damp under running water, squeeze the excess water out and place in a gallon zipper bag.

STEP TWO

Squeeze gold acrylic craft paint into the bag, then zip it closed.

Squish the paint into the cotton mop strings until they are all coated.

STEP THREE

Turn out the gold mop strings onto a piece of aluminum foil, line up straight, and set aside to dry. The paint will stiffen the mop strings, so make sure they are straight during the drying process.

STEP FOUR

To create the hat, measure six jumbo craft sticks to four-inches long, and then cut with scissors.

Using scissors, trim additional jumbo craft sticks to the width of the hat and attach with a glue gun and glue sticks. Flip the hat over and attach one full craft stick to the base as the hat brim.

PRO TIP: You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.

STEP FIVE

Base coat the entire hat with light brown acrylic craft paint. Let dry, and apply a second coat, if necessary.

Dry brush medium brown acrylic craft paint in a cross-hatch pattern to resemble burlap. Let dry.

STEP SIX

Flip the hat over and attach 15 cotton mop head strings along the base of the bottom wooden craft stick with a glue gun and glue sticks.

STEP SEVEN

Attach 15 additional cotton mop head strings on a second layer with a glue gun and glue sticks.

STEP EIGHT

Glue the wooden ball to the top center of the scarecrow’s beard.

STEP NINE

To finish, tie green gingham ribbon in a bow and glue a sunflower to the center.

Attach the flowered bow to the scarecrow’s hat with a glue gun and glue sticks.

STEP TEN

Cut a scrap of orange gingham ribbon in a square, glue it to the hat, and draw stitches with a black marker.

Thread natural jute twine through a brown button, tie with a knot and glue to the scarecrow’s hat to finish.
