Some of the most cherished crafts I’ve made over the years are also the simplest. These little crochet hearts are one of those sweet, quick wins that bring a surprising amount of joy. There is something so special about a handcrafted item

They’re a great way to use up scrap yarn and make something meaningful—no big time commitment required.

Easy Crochet Heart Tutorial
Crocheted Heart FAQs:
What size are these hearts?
The finished size depends a bit on your yarn and hook, but with worsted weight yarn and a 5mm hook, mine came out around 2.5 inches across.
Can I use different yarn weights?
Absolutely! Thinner yarn and smaller hooks will give you daintier hearts, while chunky yarns will make plumper ones. It’s a fun way to customize them.
How can I use these crochet hearts?
So many ways! Turn them into keychains, magnets, pins, garlands, or gift toppers. I’ve even seen them glued onto the front of handmade cards.
Are these beginner-friendly?
Yes! If you know how to chain, single crochet, and double crochet, you can make these hearts. It’s a great quick project for practicing stitches too.

Instructions:

Step -1:
Select a colored yarn of your choice and start your work with a slip knot at the open end of the yarn. Chain 4 and form a ring.

Step -2:
After forming the ring, work 4 chains.

Step – 3:
Work a DC (double crochet) through the center of the ring.

Step – 4:
Work 3 more DC through the center of the ring. This means that we worked a total of 4 DC.

Step – 5:
Now, work 2 TR (treble crochet) through the ring.
Step – 6:
Next, work 4 chains.

Step – 7:
Work a slip stitch through the center.

Step – 8:
Chain 4 again to start working on the other half of the heart pattern.

Step – 9:
Work 2 TR and then 4 DC through the center of the pattern.

Step – 10:
Find the 4th chain of our first 4 chains and work a slip stitch through it. The first round of the crochet heart pattern is done.

Step – 11:
Work 4 chains to start the second round of the heart pattern.

Step – 12:
Work 1 DC into the same chain stitch where we worked the slip stitch.

Step – 13:
Now, work 2 DC into the next chain stitch.

Step -14:
Work 2 DC into the next 2 chain stitches.

Step -15:
Now, work 1 DC and 1 TR into the next chain stitch.

Step -16:
Work 2 TR into the next chain stitch.

Step -17:
Work 3 TR into the next (last) chain stitch.

Step -18:
Find the first stitch of the 4 chains of that end. Work 1 DC into the first chain stitch of the 4 chains.

Step -19 and 20:
Now, chain 4 and slip stitch into the center of the heart pattern.

Step -21:
Work 4 chain stitches.

Step -22:
Find the 4th chain of the top chain stitch and work a DC into the 4th chain stitch.

Step -23:
Follow this pattern for the next 6 chain stitches – 3 TR, 2 TR, 1 Tr-1DC, 2 DC, 2 DC, and 2 DC.

Step -24:
Find the 4th chain of the next stitches and work a slip stitch into it.

Step -25:
Remove the crochet hook and cut off the yarn from the bundle by leaving a few inches extra.

Step -26:
Insert a tapestry needle through the open end of the yarn.

Step -27:
Work a few running stitches on the backside of the heart pattern and then cut off extra yarn.
Ideas for Gifting Your Crochet Hearts:
- Tuck into lunchboxes or care packages as a surprise “thinking of you”
- Use as party favors or wedding decor
- Add essential oil drops and use as scented drawer sachets
- One of my favorite uses? I used to teach my craft club at school (when I was a teacher) to make them and we’d donate them to a local organization that hands them out to unhoused people with a little note that says “you are loved”. Now I make them on my own for this purpose.
Variations to Try:
- Add a border in a contrasting color for a layered look
- Stitch two together and lightly stuff for a plushie-style heart
- Sew onto a baby hat or sweater for an adorable accent
These little crochet hearts are more than just cute—they’re a reminder of how even a small handmade item can carry big meaning. I hope they bring a little extra love and creativity into your day, just like they have in mine.
