Did you go to the beach over the summer? If you did and you came back with a collection of seashells, here is a fun craft you might want to make out of them: DIY Seashell Earrings.
If you haven’t been to the beach but you still want to make this adorable jewelry, no worries. You can often find shells at dollar stores or craft stores. No luck there? You can order seashells online as well. They even sell shells that are predrilled with holes for jewelry making. If you’d prefer, they sell faux seashells with holes in them as well.
List of Supplies for the Earrings:
- 2 Sea shells of the same size
- Earring hooks
- Jewelry pliers
- Beading wire
- Small round beads – 2 different sizes
How to Make the Earrings:
Step 1:
Select 2 seashells of the same size and shape. As mentioned above, you can use store-bought seashells that are sold for crafting and have holes. You can also use a jewelry drilling tool or awl to make holes in the sea shells. With the proper tip, a Dremel tool (or something similar like this Hardell rotary tool) would be a good option too. The holes should be in the shell’s inner (narrow) side. Measure and cut out a 5” long strand of beading wire. Fold the wire in half.
Step 2:
Insert one end of the beading wire through a hole in a seashell and bring the shell to the half-fold part.
Step 3:
Now, hold both open ends of the wire together and insert beads through them.
Step 4:
2 or 3 beads would give a nice balanced look. Hold the open end of the wire with a looping plier, adjacent to the last bead. Create a loop and start coiling the remaining wire below the loop, around the wire.
Step 5:
Attach a hook (earring hook) through the end loop of the wired shell and beads.
Step 6:
Now, repeat those steps to create a second earring to complete the pair.
