Clay Butterfly Craft

This clay butterfly craft is so easy to make following our step-by-step photos and instructions. It is the perfect accompaniment for our Very Hungry Caterpillar clay craft and clay fruits.

You’ll need several shades of clay to make this colorful butterfly. You can use clay tools if you prefer, but your fingers will work just fine when forming it as well. Add magnets to the back to make a fridge magnet, a suction cup to use this in the window, or hang up like a mobile.

Clay Butterfly Craft

Supplies Needed:

  • Air dry clay or foam clay
  • Clay tools if desired. You can simply use your fingers to form the clay as well.

Instructions:

Step 1:

Select green, red, black, yellow, blue, and purple colored clays for the clay butterfly craft (or any colors of your choice). Let’s start with any one side of the wings. Take a small amount of blue clay to create 1/4 of a wing. Roll it into a smooth round shape.

Step 2:

Continue working with the clay ball to form it into a teardrop shape.

Step 3:

Flatten the teardrop shape by pressing it against a flat surface.

Step 4:

Take a small amount of red clay and form it into a small disc shape for the wide part of the wing.

Step 5:

Use black clay to make a small (about the same size as the red disc shape) trianglular shape.

Step 6:

Attach the red clay disc and black clay triangle shape on the blue teardrop shape, near its round edge.

Step 7:

Create another blue teardrop shape, slightly smaller than the previous one. Attach a smaller green teardrop shape on the top of the blue one.

Step 8:

Attach small yellow clay dots around the round edge of the blue teardrop shape, near the outer edge of the green teardrop shape.

Step 9:

Attach small red dots on the yellow dots and attach 2 yellow stripes on the green teardrop shape.

Step 10:

Prepare a green teardrop shape (same size as the small blue teardrop shape) and attach a smaller purple teardrop on to.

Step 11:

Add small round yellow clay pieces with red clay dots on it, around the round edge of this green clay base.

Step 12:

Prepare a purple teardrop shape (same size as the big blue teardrop shape) and attach a small yellow clay diamond shape near its round edge.

Step 13:

Add a round red shape onto the yellow diamond shape.

Step 14:

Check all 4 parts of the clay wings and add more details if desired.

Step 15:

Join the clay wing parts side by side, keeping the big ones on the open sides (top and bottom).

Step 16:

Form the body (like a snake) from yellow clay and the head (small round shape) from red clay.

Step 17:

Add the head to one end of the yellow body shape.

Step 18:

Join the clay wings onto one side of the clay body.

Step 19:

Make another set of the clay wings (using the same patterns as before) and join it along the other side of the clay body.

Step 20:

Make 2 small antenna shapes from green clay.

Step 21:

Add the clay antenna shapes to the top of the head.

Step 22:

Attach the clay eyes and mouth on the head to complete the craft.
