Craft Stick Love Bugs

Using simple dollar store supplies, you and your kids can create these adorable Craft Stick Love Bugs in about half an hour. Simple and inexpensive, they are fun to do at home, or with a group (such as Brownies).

Bright and colorful, they’re a fun decoration for Valentine’s Day. Add a simple hanger on the back using something like a chenille stem or, my personal favorite, a pull tab from a pop can. Or add magnetic tape and use as a fridge magnet.

DOLLAR STORE CRAFT STICK LOVE BUGS KIDS CRAFT

Materials:

  • Craft Sticks, Jumbo
  • Heart Doilies, Red, Pink, White
  • Glitter Foam Hearts
  • Washable Marker, Black
  • Chenille Stems, White, Red, Pink
  • Tinsel Pom Pom, White, Red, Pink
  • Glue Gun and Glue Sticks – Low Temp Works Best
  • Acrylic Craft Paint – Red, Pink, White
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil with a new eraser
  • Scissors

Instructions:

STEP ONE

Gather all supplies. To create each love bug, line up five jumbo craft sticks on your work surface. Using scissors, trim additional jumbo craft sticks to the width of the love bug and attach with a glue gun and glue sticks.

TIP: You can use liquid craft glue for this project, but you will have to wait for it to dry.

STEP TWO

Basecoat the love bugs with white, red, and pink acrylic craft paint. Let dry, and apply a second coat, if necessary. Use washable markers, crayon, or even colored pencil to color the jumbo craft sticks.

STEP THREE

Flip the love bugs over and attach two heart doilies to the back using a glue gun and glue sticks. These will be the wings.

STEP FOUR

Attach two wiggle eyes and a tinsel pom pom to each love bug with a glue gun and glue sticks.

Create cheeks by dipping a new pencil eraser into red or pink acrylic craft paint and stamping on either side the love bug’s nose.

STEP FIVE

Wind the chenille stems around the pencil to create a coil. Bend in half and attach a small glitter foam heart to each end of the antennae with a glue gun and glue sticks.

Flip the love bugs over and attach the antennae to the top with a glue gun and glue sticks. Mix and match the colors to create your own unique combinations.

STEP SIX

Attach a large glitter heart to each of the love bug’s bodies with a glue gun and glue sticks.

STEP SEVEN

To finish, draw a smile on each craft stick Valentine love bug face from cheek to cheek with a washable black marker.
