6 Collaborative Crafts You Can Try With Your Grandchildren

You don’t need a Pinterest-worthy craft room or a big budget to have a wonderful afternoon with your grandkids. Some of the sweetest memories come from sitting around the table, making something with your hands, and chatting while you work.

Whether you’re creating a keepsake or simply enjoying an afternoon together, these collaborative crafts are a fun way to encourage creativity while strengthening your bond.

Start a Scrapbook Together

A scrapbook is a craft that becomes a treasured family keepsake. Plus, it’s easy to make! You just need a blank album, some printed photos, and whatever decals (e.g., stickers, colored paper, tape, glitter, etc.) you’ve got lying around.

As you bring each page to life, your grandchildren will hear family stories they may never have known. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share favorite memories, laugh over old photos, and preserve family history together.

Decorate Kindness Rocks

Gather smooth stones, paint them with cheerful designs or encouraging words, and hide them around your community for others to find. It’s an easy craft for almost any age and opens the door to conversations about kindness, generosity, and bringing a smile to someone else’s day.

Make a Birdhouse

Making a birdhouse is another great project, and it can be as involved or as easy as you wish. For example, if you have basic woodworking skills, you can build the house from scratch.

Otherwise, you can buy one of the many basic wooden birdhouse kits that are available at most craft stores and come with pre-cut pieces.

In either case, your grandchild can handle the painting and decoration while you manage the assembly. This project is especially fun because it results in a practical yard accessory that will bring beautiful birds to your yard for you and your grandchildren to admire.

Watching birds move into something you built together makes the project even more rewarding and gives you another activity to enjoy on future visits.

Make a Quilt

Quilting may seem like a project for experienced crafters, but it’s actually a wonderful activity to share with grandchildren. For example, you can let your grandkids pick whatever colorful, funky fabrics they want in the quilt.

Throughout the process, you can let your grandchildren make small layout decisions and teach them safe parts of the sewing, cutting, and measuring. When you’re all done making your first quilt together, you all can cozy up under it for a movie night or story time.

Paint Ceramic Pieces

Most cities have paint-your-own pottery studios, but you can also pick up plain ceramic pieces and acrylic paint at a craft store for an at-home event. One of the best parts is that there are no right or wrong designs.

Everyone’s personality shines through, making each finished piece completely unique.

You can paint whatever you want, and everyone ends up with something pretty and – more often than not – practical (like a plate, mug, or oil dispenser). These pieces will become reminders of the crafty afternoon you spent together.

Press and Frame Wildflowers

Getting your grandchildren outside and involved in the arts is a win-win, and that’s exactly what this wildflower project offers. The first step is walking around the yard or a nearby park and collecting interesting flowers.

Then, you press them flat between the pages of a heavy book for a week. Once that’s done, you extract the flattened, dried flowers and arrange them on cardstock and frame them.

The process takes two sessions, but it requires zero experience and will get your grandkids paying closer attention to the beauty that’s already growing around them.

Craft and Connect

These collaborative crafts you can try with your grandchildren are perfect for spending quality time together. The finished project is only part of the reward.

The conversations, laughter, and shared moments are what your grandchildren are most likely to remember years from now.

Pick one of these collaborative crafts, gather a few simple supplies, and enjoy an afternoon of creating something special together. You may end up making memories that last even longer than the craft itself.
