Tips To Match Paint Colors With Hardwood Flooring

Filed Under: HOME AND GARDEN, Home Decor

Many homeowners make the mistake of picking their favorite color and painting a room. They fail to think about the essence of the space before placing the brush on the wall.

Instead of aimlessly stepping into your local hardware store for painting, walk in with a purpose. Use these tips to match paint colors with hardwood flooring to guide you.

Tips To Match Paint Colors With Hardwood Flooring

Know the Wood’s Undertone

The first step is to know the undertone of your home’s hardwood flooring. Flooring is the foundation of the room, and it’s not a simple task to change. When you know the undertone of the floor, you can efficiently match a paint color with the wood.

Here’s a list of the three types of undertones:

  • Cool wood undertones: shades of blue, gray, green, and black
  • Warm wood undertones: shades of orange, yellow, red, and pink
  • Neutral wood undertones: shades of gray, taupe, and beige

Once you recognize the type of wood undertone within the flooring, you can move forward to the next important factor to remember.

Paint the Walls the Opposite Color of the Wood’s Undertone

It may seem counterintuitive to paint the walls with a different undertone than the wood. However, this is one of the most effective methods to create contrast and balance in each room.

Pair cool wood tones with warm paint colors and warm wood tones with cool shades of paint. The contract between the two establishes a balance that won’t overpower the room’s design.

With neutral undertone flooring, paint the walls a warm or cool color. You have the freedom to choose just about any paint color with neutral undertone flooring because you have both warm and cool colors to pick from.

Know Paint Colors That Are Complementary Hardwood

If you need some assistance with the concept, you’ll find the following information helpful. Here are a few shades of paint homeowners adore and the types of hardwood that fit with them effortlessly.

Navy Blue

Navy blue is a popular paint color for homeowners to add to kitchens and living rooms. With a cool undertone, homes with warm hardwood floors will create a gorgeous balance. Woods like mahogany and walnut will pair seamlessly with navy blue paint.

Burgundy

Burgundy is a dark paint color with warm tones that will make any room feel cozy. The color is stunning when paired in rooms with cool undertones. Woods like white oak and beech are two incredible types that’ll perfectly suit this paint color.

Ivory

A clean white paint color is occasionally too bright for a room. Instead, ivory is a favorable paint color with a neutral undertone.

If ivory paint is the color of your choice, you can have warm or cool hardwood floors. Cherry hardwood, white oak, ash, maple, and pine work well with it. The darker flooring shades create the necessary contrast to establish a gorgeous design and enlarge the room.

Use Samples To Test the Shades of Paint

The best way to know if the paint colors suit your existing hardwood flooring is to bring home samples. Whether it’s a small can of paint to test on the wall or a paper sample, set it on the wall near the flooring to see how the colors complement one another.

Paying attention to the paint and type of hardwood flooring you have is beneficial. Paint increases resale value when paired with restored wood finishes and new wood materials alike! If you take the time to choose the right color and ensure your hardwood floor looks attractive, you’ll have a freshly designed home that’s perfect for today and selling in the future.
