Easy Spoon Witch Craft for Kids

Filed Under: CELEBRATE, CREATE, Dollar Store Crafts, Halloween, Kids' Crafts

This adorable spoon witch craft is a fun Halloween project for kids—and you only need a few simple supplies to make it. With a painted spoon, colourful felt, and a tiny handmade broomstick, children can create a not-too-spooky witch for Halloween displays, classroom activities, or imaginative play.

You can use a plastic spoon like the one shown here or substitute a disposable wooden or bamboo spoon for a slightly more rustic look. If you’re repurposing a spoon you already have, make sure it has been thoroughly washed and dried before crafting.

You can use a plastic spoon like the one shown here or substitute a disposable wooden or bamboo spoon for a slightly more rustic look. Because plastic utensils are rarely accepted for recycling, this is also a cute way to repurpose a clean spoon you already have. Make sure it has been thoroughly washed and dried before crafting.

Supplies Needed

Wooden spoon with colourful felt pieces, a twig, and witch craft decorations.
  • Spoon—plastic, wooden, or bamboo
  • Coloured felt
  • Small twig or wooden stick
  • Acrylic craft paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Fabric marker or tailor’s chalk
  • Craft glue
  • Black permanent marker
  • Spoon witch craft template

How to Make a Spoon Witch

Step 1

Choose the felt colours you would like to use for your witch. Trace the template pieces onto the felt using a fabric marker or tailor’s chalk. Carefully cut out each piece.

Orange fringed felt broom piece attached to a small twig.

Step 2

To begin making the witch’s broom, glue one end of the small twig or stick to the uncut edge of the felt broom piece.

Orange felt wrapped around a twig to create a miniature witch’s broom.

Step 3

Wrap the uncut edge of the felt broom piece around the end of the stick. Secure the felt with glue and allow it to dry.

Step 4

Glue the felt band across the witch’s hat.

Step 5

Choose an acrylic paint colour for your witch—we used green. Paint the back of the spoon’s bowl and the lower portion of its handle. You can leave the middle of the handle unpainted because it will be covered by the dress. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Step 6

Glue the larger hair piece to the back of the spoon’s bowl.

Orange felt bangs attached to the top of the painted spoon.

Step 7

Glue the bangs to the front of the spoon near the top of the bowl. The spoon’s bowl should be positioned between the back hair piece and the bangs.

Step 8

Glue the completed hat to the top of the witch’s hair.

Step 9

Use a black permanent marker to draw the witch’s eyes, nose, and mouth on the painted spoon.

Step 10

Arrange and glue the decorative felt pieces onto the dress.

Step 11

Glue the completed dress around the spoon’s handle, directly below the bowl. Attach the broomstick to one side of the dress to complete your spoon witch craft.

Helpful Crafting Tips

  • Protect your work surface before using acrylic paint.
  • If you’re using a wooden or bamboo spoon, you may need an extra coat of paint because the wood can absorb some of it.
  • Let the paint dry completely before gluing on the felt pieces.
  • Younger children may need help tracing and cutting the smaller felt pieces.
  • Tacky craft glue works especially well for attaching felt. A low-temperature glue gun can also be used with close adult supervision.
  • Children can personalize their witches by choosing different colours for the hair, hat, dress, and face.

Ways to Use Your Spoon Witch

Once the glue is completely dry, your little witch is ready for some Halloween fun. Here are a few ways to use her:

  • Put on a Halloween puppet show.
  • Use her as a character while telling a favourite witch story.
  • Add her to a Halloween sensory bin or dramatic-play area.
  • Display her in a jar or small vase with other spoon characters.
  • Attach a loop of ribbon to the back and hang her as a Halloween decoration.
  • Make several witches with different hair, clothing, and facial expressions to create a whole collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a wooden spoon for this craft?

Yes. A disposable wooden or bamboo spoon is a great alternative to a plastic spoon. The wood may absorb some of the acrylic paint, so you might need to apply a second coat.

Can I use construction paper instead of felt?

You can substitute coloured cardstock or construction paper for the felt. Cardstock will be sturdier, while construction paper may be easier for younger children to cut.

What kind of glue works best?

Tacky craft glue works well for attaching felt to the spoon. An adult can also use a low-temperature glue gun if the pieces need a stronger hold.

Can younger children make this witch craft?

Younger children can help paint the spoon, choose the colours, and draw the witch’s face. An adult may need to cut out the felt pieces and help assemble the smaller details.
