Ingredients You’ll Need

You only need four ingredients to make these Halloween Monster Oreos.

  • 8 Oreo cookies: Regular Oreos work well, but you can experiment with other varieties.
  • 12 ounces purple candy melts: These give the cookies their bright purple monster coating.
  • 8 large candy eyes: We used candy eye decorations with eyelashes.
  • 3 tablespoons monster sprinkles: We used Little Monster sprinkles, which include colorful shapes and smaller candy eyes.

You can substitute other candy eyes and Halloween sprinkle mixes if you can’t find these particular products.

Can I Use Different Colors?

Absolutely! Purple is especially fun for these little monsters, but green, orange, pink, or blue candy melts would work beautifully.

You could even make several colors and create a whole family of Halloween monsters.

How to Make Monster Oreos

These Halloween Oreo treats are incredibly easy to put together. Have your decorations ready before you begin so you can add them while the candy coating is still wet.

Step 1: Prepare Your Work Area

Line a baking sheet or tray with parchment paper.

Set out your Oreo cookies, candy eyes, and sprinkles so everything is within easy reach.

Step 2: Melt the Candy Coating

Place the purple candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave using the defrost or low-power setting for 2 minutes, then stir.

Continue heating in 1-minute intervals on the defrost setting, stirring between intervals, until the candy melts are smooth.

Stop heating as soon as the coating is fully melted. If your microwave runs hot, use shorter intervals to prevent overheating.

Step 3: Dip the Oreos

Dip each Oreo cookie into the melted purple candy coating, turning it to cover both sides.

Lift the cookie out with a fork or dipping tool, allowing the excess coating to drip back into the bowl.

Place the coated cookie onto the prepared parchment paper.

Repeat with the remaining Oreos.

Step 4: Add the Monster Eyes

While the candy coating is still wet, place one large candy eye near the center of each Oreo.

Press gently so it stays in place.

Step 5: Give Your Monsters Some Hair

Sprinkle the colorful monster sprinkles across the top portion of each cookie, above the large candy eye.

Let some of the sprinkles overlap and stick out around the edges to create messy monster hair.

If your sprinkle mix contains smaller candy eyes, you can add a few of those for extra personality.

Step 6: Let the Coating Set

Leave the decorated Oreos on the parchment paper until the candy coating has completely hardened.

Once set, they’re ready to serve!

Tips for Making the Best Monster Oreos

Work with a few cookies at a time. Candy melts can begin to set fairly quickly, so decorate each Oreo while the coating is still wet.

Don’t overheat the candy melts. Low heat and frequent stirring help keep the coating smooth and easy to work with.

Use a fork or dipping tool. This makes it easier to lift the Oreos out of the coating and remove the excess.

Keep the decorations close by. Having your candy eyes and sprinkles ready makes decorating much easier.

Don’t worry about making them perfect. Crooked eyes, wild sprinkle hair, and slightly uneven candy coating are all part of their monster charm.

Let the cookies set completely. The coating needs to harden before you move, stack, or package the finished treats.

Fun Ways to Customize Your Oreo Monsters

One of the best things about these Halloween treats is how easy they are to personalize.

Try making green monsters with purple hair, orange monsters with black and white sprinkles, or pink monsters with several candy eyes.

You can also use different sizes of candy eyes or arrange two or three eyes on each cookie instead of just one.

For a Halloween party, make an assortment of colors and expressions. No two monsters need to look alike!

How to Store Monster Oreos

Store the finished Monster Oreos in an airtight container at a cool room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat.

Place parchment paper between layers if you’re stacking them to help protect the decorations.

For the best appearance and texture, enjoy them within about a week.

If your kitchen is particularly warm, you may need to store them somewhere cooler to keep the candy coating from softening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Make Monster Oreos Ahead of Time?

Yes! These are a great make-ahead Halloween treat. Prepare them a day or two before your party and keep them in an airtight container until you’re ready to serve.

Can I Use White Chocolate Instead of Candy Melts?

You can use white chocolate, but you’ll need to color it with an oil-based food coloring designed for chocolate. Regular water-based food coloring can cause melted chocolate to seize.

Colored candy melts are generally the easier option for this recipe.

Can Kids Help Make These?

Definitely! Kids can have fun adding the candy eyes and sprinkle hair. An adult should handle melting the candy coating and supervise dipping while it’s warm.

What If My Candy Melts Are Too Thick?

If the coating seems too thick for dipping, you can stir in a small amount of a candy-melt thinning product or food-grade cocoa butter, following the product directions.

Avoid adding water, which can cause the coating to seize.

Do I Have to Use Oreo Cookies?

No. Other chocolate sandwich cookies can work, too. Just choose cookies sturdy enough to hold together when dipped in the melted coating.
