How to Prepare Your Home for Spring

Spring is right around the corner and it’s almost time to get your home ready. It is important to remember that keeping a healthy and safe home goes far beyond vacuuming and dusting. In fact, there are several things you should be paying close attention to in order to make sure your home is ready for spring this year.

HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR SPRING

Start with the Exterior

The outside of your home is far more important than many think. In fact, it has probably endured more wear and tear from the elements over the winter than the interior has. Do a walk around your home, taking a close look at everything.

Make sure to check the weather stripping on widows and doors and examine the caulking around them as well. Replace any weather stripping that is worn and re-caulk any spots that are cracking or old.

Check over your window screens. Repair or replace as needed and give them all a good cleaning.

Examine any concrete slabs for cracks or other problems. On a nice day, clean it well with a pressure washer, let dry thoroughly, and use concrete crack filler to make your repairs. Once completely dry and cured, seal the concrete to help protect against further issues.

It is also a good idea to ensure to inspect your roof for broken or missing tiles or shingles. Clean out the downspouts and gutters at the same time. Don’t forget to check out your chimney, looking for any loose or missing bricks. Schedule a cleaning with a professional chimney sweep.

Check out Your Landscaping Tools

It may not be time for you to start watering your lawn and planting flowers yet, but it is a good time to ensure that your hoses and landscaping tools are ready to be put to good use. Replace any items that are worn or broken. Now is a good time to sharpen the blades of your lawn mower and any other cutting implements.

Check your garden hoses and outdoor faucets for damage. Turn the water to your outdoor faucets back on (if the danger of freezing has passed) and check to ensure that it is flowing properly without any leaks.

Remove debris from sidewalks and rake up any leaves in your plant beds and lawn.

Make Sure Everything in Your Home is Functioning

Now move to the interior. Spring is the best time to make sure that your air conditioning, heating, and ventilation  systems in your home are functioning properly. Make sure that all air filters have been replaced, switching over to the ones for spring and summer. Don’t forget to check all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors too.

Start Your Spring Cleaning Routine

Now is the best time to begin your spring cleaning. Dust off ceiling fans, clean out fireplaces and clean baseboards. Do a deep clean, removing any debris or dust that has accumulated over the winter months. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be boring. Put on some music and make a list. It’s such a feeling of accomplishment when you can start checking those items off! Follow some simple spring cleaning tips to ensure that process goes smoothly.

With spring nearly upon us, now is a good time to being preparing your home so you have more time to enjoy the sunny weather. From the exterior of your home and landscaping to your home’s functioning systems and spring cleaning, you and your home will be ready for spring in no time.

It’s still cold here, but I’m so excited for spring to finally come! I’ve already started my spring cleaning (gotta KonMari everything!) I’ve been through all of the closets in the house, and next I plan on going through the toys. I also have been deep cleaning the kitchen and have a tile cleaning appointment coming up to deep clean the floors. I love spring and the sense of renewal it brings and I love having a fresh and clean home to enjoy that in! This blog post has given me new ideas to help, so thanks!
