How to Choose the Perfect Carving Pumpkin

T’is the season for pumpkin everything and as we get closer to Halloween, we’re going to need to go looking for the perfect carving pumpkin. This can be more difficult than one would think. There are several different kinds of pumpkins to choose from and different qualities you’ll want to take into consideration.

how to choose the perfect carving pumpkin

When it comes to choosing the most Jack-O-Lantern ready pumpkin in the patch, here are some things you should be looking for:

Firmness

The perfect pumpkin for carving should be firm all over. While they may all look perfect from the outside, pumpkins afflicted with soft spots can tell tale of decaying on the inside.

Blemishes

Avoid choosing pumpkins that have brown spots, even if they are extremely small. This may mean that this particular pumpkin has had bugs either on it, or in it. No one wants a bug infested pumpkin as this can quickly shorten the life span of your jack-o-lantern.

Colour

These days you can purchase pumpkins in several different colours and shades, but most carving pumpkins should be extremely orange. Minor discolorations aren’t a huge deal, but green on a primarily orange pumpkin can signify a problem.

Stem

If the pumpkin’s stem breaks or bends, don’t buy it. You will want your pumpkin to have a hard, black or dark green stem. Not only will your pumpkin be healthier, but you will be grateful to have a strong handle to carry it with.

Shape

Be sure to check out the shape of your pumpkin. A misshapen pumpkin will not have a full cavity for seeds and one of the best parts of carving your pumpkin is roasting its seeds. Choose oval or round pumpkins as not only do they carve easier, but they give you more seeds and a larger canvas to display your carving art.

Damage

Frost greatly lessens the pumpkin’s shelf life, so pay attention to any indication that they may have frost damage. Look for dull colouring, particularly around the pumpkin’s stem. If you find that the discolouration is very apparent, choose a different pumpkin.

If you want to have the coolest looking Jack O’Lantern on the block, you need to begin by choosing the right pumpkin for carving. The simple tips listed above are a great way to ensure you get the best!
