heart-462873_640A member of my family recently had a stroke. This person is doing fine but I think it was a bit of a wakeup call – for me too! Shortly before this happened, I had been to see my family doctor. I was convinced that I was diabetic because of some symptoms I was having and the increased risk I have for it due to my family history.

The good news was that my blood sugar levels were really good. The bad news was that my blood pressure was high. my bad cholesterol was high, and my good cholesterol was low. Those little tidbits of information were, of course, important to me but it was the holidays and things were busy and I just filed it in the back of mind – you know, to worry about later. Then the stroke happened.

A stroke happening to someone so close to me just seemed so real and so tangible- as compared to reading clinical statistics and facts. I realized that if it could happen to that person, it could happen to me. Not only that, but being a family member, their stroke now meant that I was at a higher risk of stroke myself. Yet another reality check.

almondbreeze1I had three choices. I could sit around and worry about my risk factors, I could completely ignore my risk factors, or I could do everything in my power to decrease my risk factors. When I was chosen to be a part of the #CoolerWithAlmondBreeze Blogger Program in Canada, I took this as a sign that I should wisely choose the third option.

almondbreeze2So, here we go. (I say “we” because I’m bringing you along with me on this journey to a healthier lifestyle!). You know I’m a bit of a foodie so I’m going to start with making over my eating plan.  I remember years ago when I was much younger jumping onto every fad diet that came along. The problems with those fad diets were that they generally weren’t very healthy, they weren’t sustainable as a lifelong eating plan, and I often felt very deprived on them because I had to give up so many tasty foods.

fitbookThat’s where Almond Breeze Almond Milk is really going to come in handy. It’s an easy way to add a healthy but tasty flavour to my recipes and prevent that feeling of deprivation. I’ll be sharing these recipes with you as I come up with them, along with any other tips I find along the way. I’m actually pretty excited about this.

So, will you join me on my journey?

Disclosure – I’m super excited to be embarking on a journey to better health with the help of Almond Breeze. All opinions and ideas are my own.
