Three Types of Clay

There are three types of clay that occur naturally on the earth but have different concentrations of soil, rocks, minerals, and other natural components. Let’s look at each one.

Stoneware

Stoneware is the most versatile, and as a beginner, it’s a great choice to use at home. One of the biggest benefits of this easy-to-use clay is that it’s non-porous once fired, so it’s perfect for mugs, bowls, and anything that will hold liquids.

Earthenware

Earthenware clay is heavier than stoneware, so it’s easy to think it must be stronger; however, it’s not as heavy-duty as stoneware. It won’t hold liquid as well, and its thickness can make it a bit hard to work with. Still, some people enjoy it.

Porcelain

Porcelain dries out quickly and requires enough water at the right time to shape it. Although it’s important to understand each type of clay, porcelain is the last choice when creating beautiful pottery at home.

Pottery Wheel

You can make pottery at home without a wheel; however, it’s not easy. Pottery wheels hold the clay up and make it possible to create smooth pieces of pottery. Basic models, which are around 400 to 500 dollars, will run slower, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t useful. Higher-end wheels are nearly 1,500 dollars and are very efficient. If you’re starting at home, choose a pottery wheel for beginners.

The Kiln

Kilns create a higher heat than your conventional oven, which is necessary when firing clay to harden it. Just like pottery wheels, kilns vary in size and cost. Choose the right kiln according to how many pieces you will fire. You’ll likely need only a small kiln when working with clay at home.

Pottery Glaze

There are many ways to decorate and color your homemade pottery, and glaze is by far the most popular since it’s easy to use and works beautifully with all clay.

Acrylic glaze is easiest to work with and is clear, so it won’t interfere with the color of the clay. However, if you prefer to color your clay, add mica pigments to pottery glazes and paint them on for colorful results.

Pottery Tools

You can buy enough pottery tools to fill a room; however, it isn’t necessary. Here’s what you should have on hand when making pottery:

  • Apron and towels
  • Needles
  • Cutter wire
  • Scrappers
  • Fettling knives
  • Brushes and sponges

Once you have all your materials, you can enjoy experimenting and creating pottery at home.
