DIY Herb Markers with Cricut
Note: Instructions and images include the Cricut Joy, but the project can be completed with the Cricut Maker, Explore Air, or even a Silhouette machine.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
SVG cut file <<<Download here!
Cricut Smart Vinyl, Permanent in White
Premium Vinyl, Permanent in Lime
Crafter’s Acrylic Paints in White; Grasshopper Green; Tutti Fruitti; Wild Rose Pink
INSTRUCTIONS:
Gather supplies.
Painting the craft sticks:
Protect your work surface for painting.
Paint the craft sticks in different coordinating colors: Grasshopper Green; Tutti Frutti; Wild Rose Pink; mix equal parts of White and Tutti Fruitti; and lastly, mix equal parts of White and Wild Rose Pink.
Put painted craft sticks aside to dry.
Working in Cricut Design Space:
On a new canvas in Cricut Design Space, upload the SVG cut file.
Resize the text to ¾” high.
Resize the leaf images to ¾” high.
Move to the Color Sync tab to sort images by color of Smart Vinyl.
You want to cut all text and one leaf image in white Permanent Smart Vinyl. Cut the other leaf images in lime-colored Premium Vinyl.
Ensure the cutting machine is set to Cricut Joy. Select “Make It” in Design Space.
Set material type to Smart Vinyl, Permanent.
Choose “No Mat” from the list of cutting options.
Cutting Your Designs with the Cricut Joy:
Cut a piece of vinyl big enough for your design. Follow prompts for loading Smart Vinyl into Cricut Joy and cutting.
When the cut is complete, unload the mat from the machine.
Move to the next mat for cutting and select “Mat” from the list of cutting options.
Follow prompts for loading Premium Vinyl into Cricut Joy using the standard grip mat and cutting.
When the cut is complete, unload the mat from the machine.
Weeding Your Designs:
Cut around each design and lettering with a pair of scissors. You can also use the Cricut True Control Knife for this too if you prefer.
Using the weeding tool, peel away the excess vinyl around the cut images (and lettering) and discard.
Be sure to weed away the centers of the letters and designs.
Cut a piece of transfer tape a bit larger than the size of the text and image.
Peel away the transfer tape backing and place the transfer tape overtop of the cut vinyl. Gently rub the vinyl to help it stick to the transfer tape.
Peel away the vinyl backing, leaving just the text or image adhered to the transfer tape.
Position the image with the transfer tape on the end of the craft stick and press in place.
Press the Smart Vinyl image down with your fingers or with the Cricut scraping tool to help it to stick to the craft sticks.
Slowly and carefully remove the transfer tape leaving the vinyl image on the craft stick.
And continue these same steps for the remaining herb garden markers. Aren’t they adorable?
