Crochet Christmas Wreath

Filed Under: Crocheting, CELEBRATE, Christmas, CREATE

Christmas has always been so magical for me. And it always brings back memories of decorating with my mom. She loved filling our home with cheerful little details, especially ones that were handmade. This crochet Christmas wreath pattern, in particular, takes me back. My mom used to make a lot of these during the holiday season.

Mom would hang these from our Christmas tree, put them to packages as gift toppers, and attach pin-backs to them so we could wear them on our winter coats for a festive touch. Whether you’re trimming the tree or adding a festive charm to a gift, this wreath is a delightful addition.

FAQs:

What kind of yarn should I use for this wreath?

Worsted weight yarn works perfectly for this project. Acrylic yarns hold their shape well and come in festive colors!

How big is the finished wreath?

That depends slightly on your tension and yarn, but it generally turns out about 3-4 inches across — just right for ornaments, tags, or mini garlands.

Can I use this pattern to make garlands or larger decorations?

Absolutely! You can string a few together for a sweet garland, or try making them with bulkier yarn for a larger version.

Is this beginner-friendly?

Yes! This is a great project for beginners. If you can chain, slip stitch, and work single crochet, you’re good to go!

Instructions:

Green yarn and a crochet hook showing the starting chain for a crochet Christmas wreath ornament.

Step 1:

Make a slip knot and chain 12.

Chain ends joined to form a ring, the first step in creating a small crocheted Christmas wreath.

Step 2:

Now make a slip stitch into the first chain to make a base loop or base ring of our crochet wreath.

Beginning the first round of stitches in the ring for the crochet wreath ornament.

Step 3:

Chain 1.

Close-up of a few single crochet stitches worked into the ring to begin forming the wreath.

 Step 4:

Work a single crochet into the loop.

Several stitches now visible around the ring as the crochet Christmas wreath begins to take shape.

Step 5:

Continue to work SC into the base loop.

Step 6:

Work a total of 23 SC into the base loop. Insert your hook into the very first sc and make slip stitch to end this round.

Completed round of single crochets around the ring, creating the base of the crochet wreath.

Step 7:

Chain 1.

Finished base of the wreath ornament, ready to begin the decorative scalloped edge.

Step 8:

Work 1 DC into the next stitch.

Beginning the scalloped edging with double crochets at the top of the wreath form.

Step 9:

3 DC into the next same space.

Scalloped edge being added to the crochet wreath, giving it a festive and finished look.

Step 10:

Work 1 HDC into the next space.

Crocheted wreath with more scalloped edging being added around the ring using green yarn.

Step 11:

Now make a slip stitch into the next space.

Completed round of scalloped edging, giving the crochet wreath a festive, floral appearance.

Step 12:

Repeat this pattern around the base, (1 HDC, 3 DC, 1 HDC, slip stitch).

A chain being added to the top of the crochet wreath to form a hanging loop.

Step 13:

Don’t cut the yarn, work chain 15.

Step 14:

Make slip stitch back into the same stitch there and cut off the yarn.

Red yarn being threaded through the green crochet wreath to resemble berries or ribbon.

Step 15:

Stitch the remaining yarn tail the backside of the crochet wreath pattern. Prepare a piece of red yarn and draw it through the wreath pattern, from the front. Keep 2 inches extra tail at the front end.

Finished mini wreath ornament with a red yarn bow and berry details, ready for hanging.

Step 16:

Work running stitch around the wreath and bring the other end near the first tail. Tie a small tail bow with the open ends of the yarn.

There’s something so heartwarming about adding a little handmade charm to the holidays — especially when it carries a memory or tradition along with it. I hope this crochet wreath brings a bit of that joy into your home, just like it does in mine.

If you make one, I’d absolutely love to see it! Leave a comment below or tag me on Instagram @cyngagen or share on my Facebook page Creative Cynchronicity.
