Craft Stick Valentine Butterflies

Filed Under: Valentine's Day, CELEBRATE, CREATE, Dollar Store Crafts

Want to make a simple but fun Valentine’s Day craft with your kids? These Craft Stick Valentine Butterflies are adorable and easy to make. Using basic supplies from the dollar store, they’re inexpensive too making them a great craft project to make with a group.

This is such a fun craft project and it’s so easy to adapt the materials as needed depending on what you can find available at your local dollar store. Use construction paper hearts in place of doilies or markers in place of paint, for example. You can also use white glue instead of the glue gun but remember that you will need to add some extra drying time.

DOLLAR STORE CRAFT STICK VALENTINE BUTTERFLIES KIDS CRAFT

Materials:

  • Craft Sticks, Jumbo – Dollar Store
  • Heart Doilies, Red, Pink, White – Dollar Store
  • Glitter Foam Conversation Heart Stickers – Dollar Store (substitute any Valentine stickers that you’d prefer!)
  • Washable Marker, Black – Dollar Store
  • Chenille Stems, White, Red, Pink – Dollar Store
  • Glue Gun and Glue Sticks – Low Temp Works Best
  • Acrylic Craft Paint – Red, Pink, White
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors

Instructions:

STEP ONE

Gather all supplies. Base coat the jumbo craft sticks with white, red, and pink acrylic craft paint. Let dry, and apply a second coat, if necessary. Use washable markers, crayon, or even colored pencils to color the jumbo craft sticks.

STEP TWO

Paint decorative lines on each butterfly body with a contrasting color of acrylic craft paint. Mix and match the colors to create your own unique combinations. Set aside to let the paint dry.

STEP THREE

Attach two wiggle eyes to the top of each butterfly body with a glue gun and glue sticks. Draw a smile on each butterfly face with a washable black marker.

STEP FOUR

Cut each chenille stem in half with scissors. Bend the chenille stems in half to create a “V” shape. Roll the ends into a coil.

Flip the butterflies over and attach the antennae to the top with a glue gun and glue sticks. Mix and match the colors.

STEP FIVE

Cut the bottom half off two red, white, and pink doilies with scissors. Flip the butterflies over and attach the doily wings to the right and left sides of the body with a glue gun and glue sticks.

STEP SIX

Peel the liner paper from conversation candy heart stickers and attach to the butterfly wings.
