4 Tips for Maintaining Your Art Supplies

Filed Under: Craft Tools, Craft Room Organization, CREATE

Whether you’re a seasoned painter or just starting your artistic endeavors, the last thing you want is your painstakingly collected art supplies to meet an early demise from neglect or improper use. Fortunately, there are ways to ensure your art looks its best. Here are some essential tips for maintaining your art supplies and ensuring your masterpiece-to-be is as vibrant as your inspiration.

Tip 1: Proper Storage

The art of maintaining art supplies begins with proper storage. Organizing your supplies isn’t just about keeping your space tidy; it’s about preserving the integrity of your tools. For example, always store brushes upright to preserve the shape of the bristles.

Use breathable fabric brush holders, or make your own by repurposing a standing paper towel holder. Vinyl end caps are common in the paint industry to ensure your brushes keep their luster after use.

Tubes of paint last longer if you store them in a cool, dry place and avoid temperature extremes. A toolbox or a dedicated art supply container could be a worthy investment to keep everything sorted and protected from dust and light.

Tip 2: Regular Cleaning

Neglecting to clean your art supplies leads to clumping paint, bristles that stick together, and dried-out pens. The good news is that regular cleaning is relatively simple and prevents these ruined supplies. Thoroughly clean paintbrushes, palette knives, and palettes after use with the proper solvents, such as turpentine or paint thinner, to keep them ready for action.

Art supply manufacturers often include cleaning guidelines on packaging or their websites, which are worth checking out. For instance, brushes used with oil paints benefit from a dip in a solvent appropriate for oil, while you should clean acrylic and watercolor brushes with mild soap and water.

Tip 3: Handling and Care

Knowing how to handle and care for art supplies is as crucial as using them. Avoid pressing too hard with pencils to prolong their life. Use gentle, light strokes to avoid damaging the paper or drawing underneath when using erasers.

Another example is treating your canvas with care. If you’re stretching your canvas, handle it gently to avoid tears. Once it’s time to paint, work with materials that don’t warp your canvas, ensuring the piece looks its best and lasts.

Tip 4: Knowing When To Replace

There comes a time in every tool’s life when it can’t perform its job efficiently anymore. For brushes, this may be when the bristles become bent or frayed beyond use. For paints, it’s when they dry up or lose their pigment.

Knowing the signs to replace an art supply can save you heaps of frustration. Always watch for these telltale indications, and be prepared to invest in new tools when your current ones can’t maintain the quality you need.

Your equipment is the companion on your artistic journey and requires care to reach your creative goal. Invest in maintaining your art supplies, and see the dividends it pays in the longevity and quality of your creative tools.
