4 Homemade Cleaners for Natural Stone Countertops

Natural stone countertops are the centerpiece of many kitchens; however, maintaining their pristine look requires proper care, especially when it comes to cleaning. Many commercial cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can do more harm than good to natural stone. Below, we’ll show you how to make effective and safe homemade cleaners for your natural stone countertops.

Key Considerations When Making Homemade Cleaners

Natural stone, whether marble, granite, or quartzite, is a porous and delicate material. One of the biggest mistakes to avoid when cleaning natural stone countertops is using the wrong cleaning products that contain ammonia, acidic compounds, and other harmful ingredients.

Instead, mild cleaners made from neutral pH ingredients work best. When crafting your own cleaners, test each solution on a small, hidden area of the countertop first to ensure compatibility. With these considerations in mind, let’s learn how to make our own countertop cleaners!

DIY Cleaning Solutions for Natural Stone Counters

Many of the best homemade cleaners for natural stone countertops are quite simple recipes of only a few ingredients. You can make most of these recipes with things you have around the house, like baking soda and isopropyl alcohol.

Recipe 1: Gentle Dish Soap and Warm Water Solution

This simple yet effective cleaner is perfect for routine maintenance. To create it, mix a few drops of a gentle, pH-balanced dish soap with two cups of warm water.

Using microfiber cloth, wipe your countertops to remove grime and grease. For deeper cleaning, gently scrub in small circles to prevent streaking. Once you’re done, rinse the surface with clean water and dry with a lint-free towel to prevent water spots.

Recipe 2: Isopropyl Alcohol Disinfectant Spray

For times when your countertops need a bit of extra cleaning power, an isopropyl alcohol-based spray is an excellent choice. Combine one-part isopropyl alcohol (70 percent or higher) with three parts water in a spray bottle.

Shake before spraying directly onto the countertop. Allow it to sit for a minute to disinfect, then wipe away with a microfiber cloth.

Recipe 3: Baking Soda Paste for Stain Removal

If you’ve got a stubborn stain on your countertop, you can remove it with a baking soda paste. To make it, combine equal parts baking soda and water to form a thick consistency. Apply the paste directly to the stain, covering it with plastic wrap to keep it moist.

Allow it to sit for 24 hours, and remove the paste by rinsing it with warm water and gently wiping it with a cloth. This method is especially effective on grease or oil stains, as baking soda naturally lifts them from the surface without being abrasive.

Recipe 4: Cornstarch Polish for a Streak-Free Shine

Cornstarch is a great ingredient for achieving a streak-free shine. For this polisher, mix one tablespoon of cornstarch with two cups of warm water in a spray bottle.

Shake the mixture well and lightly spray it over your countertop. Use a dry microfiber cloth to buff the surface in circular motions until it gleams.

Protect Your Stone Countertop’s Surface

Homemade cleaners are a safe, affordable, and eco-friendly alternative to commercial products. Using common household ingredients, you gain control over what touches your surfaces, ensuring they’re chemical-free and safe. Try any of these recipes, and your home’s countertops will thank you!
