Precious DIY Father%27s Day Keepdake Gifts

When I was a kid, I always loved making handmade gifts for my dad for Father’s Day. When I would present one to him, he reacted as if it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Not only that, but he would always place those gifts in a place of honour where others could see them too. There were many times I visited his office after school only to find one of my handmade items there on display. That’s why I love to share some precious DIY Father’s Day gifts each year. I know that these will be special to the dads who receive them and will be keepsakes for them for a long time.

One gift I gave my dad that really stands out in my mind does so because it’s a pretty funny story. In fact, nowadays it would make an ideal “Pinterest fail”. He loved Jonathan Livingstone Seagull so I made him a sculpture of a seagull out of a coat hanger and yarn. To make it stand up, I placed it into a base of homemade clay. This clay was more like a dough than a clay though and as it sat in his office throughout the summer, the heat of the sun started baking the dough. It was smelly, it was messy, and it was rising just like bread dough right up out of the container.

Yet, Dad didn’t want to break my heart by throwing it out. So, month after month, he endured it. (I can only imagine what people visiting his office thought!). Finally, one day I went to see him at his office and saw what a mess it had become. Dad and I looked at it, then at each other. We both burst out laughing at the same time! With tears of laughter in our eyes (and a promise to make him another one minus the dough), we said goodbye to Jonathan and dumped him in the trash. And to commemorate the moment in true Dad fashion, we stopped off for an ice cream cone on the way home.
