How to Make Green Eggs and Ham

When I taught Kindergarten, we would read the book Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss and the kids loved it. So, to further the reading experience, we would make green eggs and ham as a snack.

We would often talk about other food and how funny it would be to make them different colors too and we would write our own versions of the book. Blue Mashed Potatoes and Chicken? Purple Noodles and Sausage? The more ideas we came up with, the more laughter ensued.

How to Make Green Eggs and Ham

It was really easy to make green eggs and ham. I had an electric skillet in my classroom and used that to make them. I whipped up some scrambled eggs and added green food coloring to them.

If you want the ham to be green as well, the best way to do that from my experience was to melt butter in the skillet and add the food coloring to that. Then, I cooked the ham in the green butter and it would take on a green tint. (Note – I made some plain food as well for the kids who didn’t want to try the green-colored food.)

Finally, for the toast, sometimes I was able to find a bakery that would make colored bread for me. If not, once again, tinting melted or softened butter and then spreading or brushing it on the toast would work.

There are some more really great Dr. Seuss ideas here.
