Instructions:
This craft is best-suited for older kids and teens. You can make them with young children, but remember that they will need close supervision with the glue gun. You could also use craft glue but, of course, you will need extra drying time. Some steps may require extra assistance as well – such as lining up the craft sticks or wrapping the yarn. Another option is to preassemble parts of the craft for them.
STEP ONE
Gather all of your materials. To create the sign base, line up seven jumbo craft sticks on your work surface. To make this easier for young children, you could cut out a square of cardboard (such as an old cereal box) and have them glue the sticks onto the cardboard. This makes it easier to line them up and keep them together when applying the top sticks.
Attach a jumbo craft stick at the top and bottom.
STEP TWO
Base coat the sign with watered down dark brown acrylic craft paint. This will serve as a safe substitute for wood stain. Apply a bit of the watered down paint and then use a paper towel to wipe away the excess. I like to work in small sections at a time as this can dry quickly.
If you prefer, you could also color the sticks with paints (without watering them down and using them as a stain), washable markers, crayons, or colored pencils.
STEP THREE
Download, print and cut out our Yarn Wrapped Heart Pattern. Use this as a template to trace the heart onto a scrap of corrugated cardboard (we cut up old boxes). Of course, you can also have your child freehand a heart and use that instead.
Carefully cut out the heart with scissors. Younger children may need assistance with this step as the thickness of the cardboard can make it difficult to cut through.
STEP FOUR
Gather several colors of yarn. We used red and pink but you can use any colors you want. You’ll want at least 2 colors but you can certainly use more. My grandson chose “all the colors of the rainbow” for his.
Tie the two ends of the yarn together in a knot and attach to the back if the cardboard heart with glue. If you’re using more than two colors, we found it easiest to do two at a time.
Tip: The more colors of yarn you use, the more difficult this wrapping process can be. To keep things as simple as possible, stick to only 2 colors.
STEP FIVE
Start wrapping both strands of yarn around the cardboard heart in a random fashion. Continue wrapping and securing every fifth or sixth wrap with a small dot of glue.
Continue wrapping the yarn around the heart in a haphazard manner until you can no longer see any cardboard.
Tie the ends of the yarn together in a knot and attach to the back if the cardboard heart with glue.
STEP SIX
Attach the yarn wrapped heart to the craft stick sign with glue. You’re going to want to press this down really well and hold in place for a minute or so to ensure that it adheres well.
STEP SEVEN
Measure and cut a 12” length of jute twine (or whatever type of string you’re using). Glue the ends of the twine to the top right and left-hand sides of the stick on the back of the sign. See photo above for reference.
STEP EIGHT
Tie ribbon into a bow. You can cut a notch or cut the ends of the ribbon on a diagonal to help prevent fraying. Glue to the top corner of the sign.
