You’re Invited to the Crafterminds Wedding!: A Paper Quilled Cake Topper

CM Wedding

It’s wedding season and we are celebrating with our own Crafterminds wedding!  Be sure to check out all the links to the wonderful wedding projects!

For my project, I decided to make a paper quilled cake topper.  This is kind of a dry run for that day when my daughter gets engaged as she has already told me that she wants me to make her a cake topper similar to this too!

For the base of the topper, I used a round Styrofoam disc that I purchased in the floral department at Michaels.  I covered it with scrapbooking paper, adding a decorative element with some straight pins that have a pearl-like appearance to them.  I took the inside portion of an embroidery hoop and wrapped ribbon around it to cover it, securing with Aleene’s Tacky Glue.  The hoop formed the foundation for the ring of paper flowers.

For the flowers themselves, I used a variety of paper quilling methods from basic traditional flowers formed with the teardrop, marquise, and bunny ear shapes to those made from the more contemporary quilling methods including fringed and rolled flowers.  I even added one using the EK Success carnation punch for variety and for a final touch, added a few punched butterflies.  A little hot glue adhered the ring of flowers to the base.

I didn’t add any further embellishments to the base because I wanted there to be space for a little bride and groom (I used a bird for now)  to be added and I didn’t want it to get too busy.  Once I could see the figurines on there, there might be potential then for adding to it.  I certainly think either the base or the ring of flowers could be adapted or added to according to the theme of the wedding and preferences of the bride and groom:  buttons, pearls or other suitable beads, ribbon, bits of lace, and more!

I think this is a lovely take on a traditional wedding cake topper – just a little bit different and perfect for the crafty bride (or perhaps the bride with the crafty mother!).

WOW, Cyn! This is an amazing cake topper. I do believe you used every quilling technique. The flowers are gorgeous and I love the extras you added. The little punched butterflies — perfect! Our daughter gets married in less than 3 weeks and we talked quilled cake toppers 🙂 They are having tiered cupcakes! lol
