Well, are you ready to save some money this month? January is one of my favourite months for all of the savings it offers, but I must say that there are some wonderful ones this month as well. (Did someone say chocolate?) Be sure to check out the list below for the best deals in February.
Unless I find something really special at an amazing price, this month will be light on shopping for me. I will be looking at and pricing out some new outdoor furniture though and I am hoping to see garage doors go on sale as well. If you want to save some money, here’s what to buy in February.
What to Buy in February
Valentine’s Day Items
In the days after, all kinds of greeting cards, decorations, and of course, candy go on sale at ridiculously low prices. Buy some cards and decorations for next year. And look out for things like heart shaped cookie cutters and cake tins as well. Yes, some of the candy is very clearly Valentine themed but if it’s just for use as a treat, who cares? Some of it is perfectly acceptable for other uses.
I have often scored some of my family’s favourites on February 15th that I then popped into their Easter baskets. A friend of mine was having pink as one of her wedding colours. She found a bunch of Valentine candies marked down after the holiday that worked perfectly for her wedding. I’ve also purchased chocolate candies that I am then able to melt down and use in recipes as well.
Speaking of Valentine’s Day, think beyond the cards, decorations, and candy. Items proffered as popular Valentine gifts are often put on sale as well. I took advantage of this by buying something as a birthday gift for my daughter last year. I wanted a special piece of jewelry for her 30th and could never have afforded it without such a sale.
Flowers and jewelry are often marked down but the discounts can often go beyond that. This is a good time to check out places like Groupon for “experience” (golf or ski packages, date nights, and so on) or restaurant deals too.
Furniture and in particular mattresses and box springs tend to go on sale in February.
In the US, these are based around Presidents’ Day sales but Canada often follows suit. The only other time of the year I’ve found amazing deals on beds is in August/September when they are put on sale with college students in mind.
This is both National Canned Food Month and National Breakfast Food Month so these items tend to be promoted at reduced prices.
Both offer excellent choices for stocking up, if you have the storage space. Just be sure to check the expiration dates on them and don’t buy more than you can reasonably use in that time.
I like to purchase extra and make a big donation to the food bank too. This is a time of year when their donations have dwindled and they will really appreciate it. They often are scrambling to find enough food to hand out right about now.
Winter items.
If these are still left in stores after the January sales, they are often put on even further clearance. In fact, I just received emails from both Carter’s and Joe Fresh offering sales on end of season clearance items.
Winter coats and boots, clothing, and even winter sports equipment can be found for rock-bottom prices. You can even find deals on last minute winter ski packages now as resorts try to take advantage of the last of the season.
Boats.
It’s boat show season and specials abound. (Not that buying a boat is in my budget or my wheelhouse but just in case it’s in yours – in which case, good for you!)
This is also the time for other outdoor shows so things like gas barbecues, lawn furniture, and other outdoor supplies go on sale now.
If you have space to store these until spring, this is the perfect time to get ready for backyard fun.
Wedding goods.
Most people wait until the spring to start looking for wedding venues and other such items, so discounts are often found now. This is especially true after all of the Valentine’s Day proposals!
Electronics.
TVs are often put on sale in time for the big game so this can be a good time to buy a new one. Other electronics such as computers and tablets go on sale too.
If you can wait for Black Friday though, you will usually find the best deals then. There are often deals on these items in July/August too for back to school if you can’t wait. Either way, they are usually at a lower price than now.

This is a great list of items to buy during this month. I am always at a loss as to when I should buy things during the year.
