On Sunday, Roberta and I took a botanical drawing class “What a Bee Sees” at a local historical site, Eldon House.

The teacher was Sally Glanville and she began by having us go out into the gardens to clip a few flowers to use as models for our work. (Originally the class was going to be held in the garden but given our heat wave, we were so grateful to be in the air conditioning.)

It was such a tough decision on what flowers to bring back in and use for our sketches.  There were so many lovely choices!  Side note:  It was sad to see how parched the gardens were though.  Heat wave + watering restrictions + gardener off sick = sad flowers.

Not sure why this one turned out so blurry but I actually kind of like the effect!

This is the hollyhock that was my inspiration!

We started out with a simple pencil outline and then used chalk pastels to fill in the large areas of colour.  Further detail was added with coloured pencils.

I still plan to do some additional detail work and adding some more colour to mine!
