It’s not unusual for us to see snow in March and even April. That means we’re wearing toques and winter jackets and way too many layers of clothing for a good 6 months of the year. Blech! So, when the temperature soars into the double digits, I am SO ready to take full advantage of the sunshine and warmer weather. In fact, I am the often the first to kick off the winter boots and slip on the flip flops! And these summertime beauty shortcuts will keep me feeling good and looking fresh all season long!

As we say goodbye to the hats that hide our unwashed hair and trade our long pants for short shorts and skirts, I’m sure I’m not the only one who enters a state of ‘summertime beauty emergency.” How will I keep my hair under control on those hot, humid days? Do I need to start shaving my legs again? How will I fit all my beauty supplies into my luggage for my summer vacation? And the list goes on.
This year, I’m vowing to sleep more, hang out in the hammock more, and shave… never! Seriously! I’m also going dry… dry shampoo that is. And when it comes to summer travel, I’m going to pack light. I’m sure you’re thinking: tell me more!
Let’s start with your locks.
A good hair day can make all the difference but spending time shampooing, conditioning and blow drying every morning can leave you frantic and frazzled. My new secret weapon for fabulous hair is dry shampoo. If you haven’t heard of dry shampoo, I suggest you run, not walk, to pick up a can. My favourite brand is Batiste.
Seriously, I LOVE this stuff! It works to instantly revive oily hair, leaving it looking and smelling clean and fresh. No wet washing required and most importantly no blow drying. If I have a few extra minutes to spare, I sometimes re-style my hair but it’s not necessary.
If you’ve never used dry shampoo before, don’t worry. It’s easy to use. Simply shake can well. Hold 30 cm away from your hair, section & spray into roots. Massage thoroughly with fingertips then brush and style as desired.
It’s really important to protect your hair from sun damage too. There are spray on products you can also use on your hair to shield your hair from harmful UV rays. This is especially important if you have dyed hair.
Then there’s that hair that’s got to go.
I’m talking about the stubble on your legs that leaves you cringing when you reach for that pair of shorts or even worse the bikini you’ve been hiding in the back of your closet all winter.I prefer hair remover cream. You can be done in as little as three minutes (yes, three minutes) and it leaves you with smooth skin for days longer than shaving. Did you read that? Days! My preferred brand is Nair. I’ve been using it since I was a teenager!
Pro Tip: Stock up! Keep a can of Batiste and a tube of Nair in your bathroom at home, in the bathroom at the cottage/cabin/summer home and a third one in your gym bag. You’ll be able to freshen up your hair at a moment’s notice! And the minute you spot the stubble, you’ll have hair remover on hand. All it takes is three minutes and a quick shower or damp cloth to rinse!
What else do I add to my summertime beauty shortcuts arsenal?
Waterproof mascara is my secret weapon for humid days or afternoons at the pool that would have me looking like a raccoon in no time. I set aside my wintertime foundation and blush for a simple brush-on bronzer to add a little colour and life to my face. A pair of sunglasses to protect my eye area from fine lines, a wide-brimmed hat to protect my skin from the sun’s harmful rays, and a spray bottle of mineral water to freshen up my skin on a hot day round out my summer beauty must-haves.
P.S. Between the summer heat and a jam-packed schedule, it’s easy to let healthy eating slip by the wayside. To ensure your body gets the nutrients it needs, try adding a multivitamin to your daily health and beauty routine. A complete multivitamin is a great option. I do tend to eat much healthier in the summer (all that fresh produce!) but I can be on the go a lot. And sometimes the heat gets to me and I lose my appetite. That’s where multi-vitamins come in. I also take a bottle of water with me everywhere. It helps me stay hydrated and keeps me healthy inside and out.
So, this summer it’s all about getting your beauty rest, looking fabulous, feeling healthy and rocking those short shorts.
