Disclosure: I have partnered with Netflix Canada to bring you this post on how your family can ring in the new year with Netflix. I have received compensation in exchange for this post but I am a huge Netflix fan and all opinions, as always, are my own.

ring in new year with netflix
What are you doing on New Year’s Eve? With a new baby in the family, it’s going to be low-key for us this year. Oh, who am I kidding? We almost always do a laid-back evening at home celebrating as a family. And you know what? That’s how I prefer it!

Of course, with little ones in the family, it can be tough to stay up until midnight to ring in the new year. Not always for them but for us! The kids are still bouncing off the walls while the adults are struggling to keep their eyes open. And then, well if the kids are anything like I was, around 11:45 pm, the kids have collapsed into a heap and are sound asleep on the couch. Or the floor. They miss the big moment by mere minutes!

What’s a family to do? Set a new countdown time, of course! We can still feast on all those yummy finger foods, watch some movies, play some board games, and have all the same fun without the battle to stay awake.

To make the big moment just as special, you only need a few key elements to ring in the new year.

1) Noisemakers.

Purchase your standard party horns at your local dollar store OR make your own kazoos. The kids can decorate toilet paper tubes and then secure a piece of waxed paper over on end with an elastic band. Or how about tambourines made out of disposable pie plates? Add some streamers, glue on some stickers or construction paper shapes to decorate them. To make them even noisier, toss some jingle bells or beads inside before securing two pie plates together.

2) Party hats.

Again, purchase these at the dollar store. These can be enhanced with pompoms, Christmas garland, fringe, or other such items at home. Or put out a bunch of supplies and let the kids make their own hats from scratch. Wearing something silly is part of the fun isn’t it?

3) The countdown.

Okay, if you can’t make it to midnight, you’re not going to see the ball drop in New York City. Never fear. Netflix has solved that problem for you and in a very family friendly way. Simply go to Netflix and search “New Year’s Eve Countdown”. It’s available from Dec. 26th on. There you’ll find 9 different countdowns to choose from. You can press play on the night’s festivities whenever and however you want, so they’re off to bed sooner. And you know what that means. I would say it means that then you can have your own adult celebration afterwards but in my home, it simply means the adults can go to bed sooner too!

It’s genius, don’t you think? No being tied to the clock. Netflix has set you free on New Year’s Eve! Oh and if you want to go around the house changing all of your clocks to match your planned countdown time, you go right ahead. We won’t judge.
