Episode: What Women Want
Well, the challenge for this week was to find a man who could describe to us what kind of outfit he would like us to make for his significant other. He was to have input into colour, design, style but we still had to make our creative voice show through. We had 12 hours to complete this garment.
I used a friend of mine as a client and had him talk to me about an outfit for his girlfriend. He wanted something fairly casual but trendy (“like a jumpsuit or maxi dress” – his words). He said that she really likes prints but simple ones like polka dots or stripes and her favourite colours are blue and purple. According to him, her favourite assets to show off are her cleavage and her back.
I actually had designed a jumpsuit a few weeks back and then decided against using it so I brought that design back to the table. I played with it a bit to accommodate some of his requests – specifically altering the neckline and back. I did NOT have an easy go of it this week. I used every second of the 12 hour time limit and had problem after problem. The first jumpsuit I made was a disaster so I started over.
The second time around was not much better. Unfortunately, the fabric kept unravelling and fraying. I tried to play this up a bit around the arm holes and the front edge to make it look like fringe – that part I like but it frayed at the seams as well and no amount of Fray Check seemed to help. On top of that, I have some fit issues. Tim and Michael both pointed out the camel toe effect, Nina commented on the unfortunate humps that formed on the shoulders, and Heidi felt that I showed a lack of skill in construction. I couldn’t disagree with any of them.
I chose to keep the styling on the simple side. There were enough problems with my garment without adding more to it. These shoes are from the Piperlime Accessory Wall and are Candy by Joes Jeans.
I sure hope I can rebound in this next challenge but I have to say it’s got me a bit worried. Men’s garments are not exactly my forte, especially in this small format!!

the fabric is the toughest part of these challenges. My poor sweater unravelled to the point where I had to put hot glue on the edge of it so that it would stay together. Bleh.
I like your jumpsuit. A little 80s casual with a bit of a deconstructed look. 🙂
