My family and friends and I are all so blessed. We have so much in life – everything we need and so many things we want. That’s why this Christmas, I’m buying holiday gifts that give back. These are such a win-win. They make the gift recipient happy and they help someone we’ve never met before. Perfect for so many people on my holiday gift list and they work well as gifts for those you don’t know well (secret Santas, co-workers, teachers and so on), and as last minute gift solutions. Continuing on with Mitzvah Week and since it’s Giving Tuesday, here are some of my favourites:
UNICEF Canada Survival Gifts – These gifts provide much needed real supplies to children. There are many options to choose from including Ebola Prevention Packs, Bed Nets, Water Packs, and Rehabilitation of Child Soldiers. My favourites, as a former teacher, are the ones focused on education. Here’s my picks –
The Girls’ Education Kit – $88 School in a Box – $231
Art in a Box – $34 Send a Child to School – $80:
The World Vision Gift Catalogue – Providing children around the world with the supplies they need to survive and thrive. Includes similar gifts to UNICEF but also the option of purchasing handmade items from around the world that help people earn their own living and provide for their families. I really love the idea of supporting independence.
Hand-carved Wooden Spoons – $65 Start a Business – $100
Beekeeping Kit – $60 Fish Farm for a Family – $65
Free the Children Gift Catalogue – I just attended my first We Day and I was incredibly impressed by the work of Free the Children and by all of the school kids involved in it. (Blog post coming tomorrow).
Bundle of Baby Chicks – $25 A Dairy Goat – $50
Clean Water for a Family for Life – $125 Women’s Empowerment Kit – $150
EDITED TO ADD: I just came across this gift catalog from Canadian Feed the Children and wanted to share a few of their items as well.
Fruit Trees – $25 Seeds – $25
There are tons more items to choose from in each of these catalogues and many more charities that you can support as well. There’s a gift that gives back option for everyone on your list!

These are some great options. I usually choose charities at home, like the local foodbank, but I have to admit that I’m tempted to give the gift of clean water instead!
