Family Day is coming up on Feb. 17, 2020 and there are TONS of fun, family-friendly events to take part in here in London, Ontario throughout Family Day weekend. There are even some FREE activities listed below. Gather the family and start making your plans now!
I love the idea behind Family Day. Sure, we have lots of holidays where we spend time with family, but this one feels so low pressure. There’s no huge meal to make, no gifts to buy, no decorating to do. Instead, it’s focused solely on spending time together and enjoying the company of your family. When you think about it, this might just be the best holiday of the year!

Family Fishing –
Ontario Family Fishing Events is a province-wide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters without the otherwise mandatory fishing version outdoors card. This is a great opportunity for you and your family to try out fishing and see if it’s something you might want to pursue as an ongoing hobby.
The Ontario Government designates four periods throughout the year as license-free. The first this year is Family Fishing Weekend, February 15-17, 2020. With the exception of the licensing requirement, Ontario fishing regulations, fees and limits continue to apply during license-free days. Learn more here.

Family Day Snowshoeing at Ska Nah Doht
Longwoods Road Conservation Area will be offering Family Day snowshoe rental, weather permitting, on Monday afternoon, February 17th! The smell of a wood fire attracts you to the heritage log cabin where inside around the woodstove, hang dozens of wood and rawhide traditional style snowshoes. Friends and family are invited to try out snowshoeing, one of the oldest forms of winter travel!
Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority staff will be on hand to teach you all you will need to know to enjoy an afternoon of fun at Longwoods. Learn about the history of snowshoeing, the different styles, and most of all, enjoy a quick outdoor lesson. Wear low or no healed winter boots and dress for an hour or two of outdoor fun! We have lots of woodland trails, or explore the Ska-Nah-Doht Village!
Snowshoe rentals will be available when conditions are suitable – a base of at least 10 cm (4 inches) of snow and no ice is ideal. Check our Facebook page for last minute updates or call us Sunday mornings 519-264-2420 to check our answering message for conditions.
When you arrive at the conservation area, admission is at the Pay and Display machine at the entrance – coin or credit card only – $5 per vehicle. Alternatively, purchase a 2020 Parking Pass for $60 (available for purchase that day at the cabin). It is good for day use at all LTVCA public conservation areas.
Further on in the conservation area, the cabin will be open for rentals at noon and the last rentals will go out no later than 3:30 p.m. The rental fee per pair is $8 including hst (cash, debit or credit) paid at the cabin. Staff will request to hold your driver’s license as a deposit on the snowshoes until they are returned.
All snowshoes must be returned to the cabin by 4:15 p.m. and cannot leave the park. We have many different sizes of snowshoes from which to choose – little ones for youngsters around 4 years old, through to big ones for adults over 175 lbs.
There is a limited number available so come early to avoid disappointment. Visitors are welcome to bring their own snowshoes as well. There is no cross-country ski rental on site.
