Fab Find Friday: Inkwell

Don’t you just love the look of an inkwell sitting on a desk?  There’s something about it – the quill pens, the inkwells, all of that which just makes me smile thinking about long past times.

When I saw this buried amongst a bunch of junk at a flea market, I was immediately drawn to it.  I haven’t found much information about it but I did find pictures of ones that looked just like this online and they were said to be made of clay (it does feel like clay when you hold it – a very strong sturdy clay) and from the Civil War era.  I have seen them selling for anywhere from $32 to 50 US so my purchase of $4 was certainly a good one!

Here’s a site where they have similar ink wells for sale: http://pages.gunsightantiques.com/5052/PictPage/1920736672.html

I would never, ever have know what this was if i found one! So thank you for sharing!
However, I would certainly have bought this piece myself if i had found it. I love the shape and I am pretty certain that is a salt glaze on the surface – one of my favorites.
