Crafter or Artist?

Lately, I have seen a lot of discussions on what it means to be an artist as opposed to what it means to be a crafter.  Some have stated that they feel it’s the same thing while others find it to be distinctly different.  I have heard people express that they are a crafter, not an artist because they aren’t “good enough and talented enough” to be an artist.  And, I have heard of some who call themselves artists looking down on those they consider crafters.  I have some ideas on this topic but I’d like to know what you think.  Is there a difference between artists and crafters?
