My backyard has a patio – well okay, it actually has 5 patio stones at the bottom of the back steps. That's it. There's really no place to sit down and relax, set up a table for an outdoor dinner, or anything like that. In the front of my house, there is a porch that is all of about 4 by 6 feet. Again, really not enough room to put out a couple of chairs and enjoy a glass of iced tea with a friend.
Now, I do have some ideas for improving this situation at my house. One of the considerations would be to replace my "patio" and the front porch with a deck. I've always wanted one that completely wraps around my house but that won't really work with its design. So, my plan would be to put in a deck all the way across the front of my bungalow and then all the way across the back of my house. The front deck would be about 6 feet deep – big enough for several rocking chairs because I want to be that little old lady who sits in her rocker in front of her house sipping some tea and watching the world go by. At the back, I'd want it to be more like 15 feet deep so that it will hold the BBQ, table and chairs, and have plenty of room for outdoor entertaining. Of course, there needs to be space for my hammock too!
Beyond the size of the deck, the other big consideration for me is to find decking materials that are durable and extremely low maintenance. My lifestyle means that I have to hire others to do my landscaping and other outdoor chores and so anytime I can find something that's easy to take care of, that's a huge sell for me! I'm currently redoing my basement and we're going with a waterproof PVC laminate flooring down there so I was pretty excited to find Royal Deck. It, too, is made of PVC and as such, it carries with it some huge advantages.
Royal Deck decking materials are weather and insect resistant. The PVC material it's made of doesn't absorb moisture whether it be from rain, snow, or spilled drinks (did I mention that my family is kind of klutzy?). No rotting, no mould, no cracking like with traditional wooden decks! And I pretty much live without shoes all spring and summer long so no cracking of the deck also means no splinters. My favorite feature of Royal Deck is the super low maintenance factor. There's no painting or staining or sealing – you literally just spray it off with your hose and you're good to go!
Royal Deck comes in 4 different finishes/colors – my favorite for my home is Pebblestone Clay. I think it would look really striking next to the orangish shade of brick on my house and it looks to me like it would match my roof shingles perfectly. In fact, I can even get fascia from Royal to match the deck! This deck definitely fits my needs and I encourage you to had on over to the Royal Building Products website and check out their decking materials for yourself!
