Do you like awards shows like the Oscars, Emmys, or Grammys? Confession time: I’m not really into them. Unless I personally know a person receiving an award, I just can’t get into them. Having our own little family awards nights was always a lot of fun though!

We’d come up with categories like Good Friend award, Makes me Laugh award, or Excellent Grades award. We’d base them on what each family member was especially good at and we’d make sure that everyone received awards and recognition for their accomplishments. Each family member got the chance to suggest categories and nominations and we often had a craft session prior to the awards ceremony to make trophies and ribbons for each other. Sometimes we’d even make some awards in secret to surprise each other.

On awards night, we’d each dress up in a special outfit – it didn’t have to be fancy but gave us an excuse to wear one of our favourites. It also gave us the excuse to add accessories like feather boas, dollar store tiaras, and all kinds of shiny bling. I bought a red carpet remnant – not a really long one but still it served well enough for our “red carpet event”. We also made a sign to hang on the wall with the name of our awards show on it (my daughter named them the “Gagenys”) so that we could stand on the red carpet in front of the sign and have pictures taken with our awards.

It was fun to role play an event we had seen on television and it was a great way to acknowledge and show appreciation for the things each family member was good at.
